ONPAR Assessment for English Language Learners
"ONPAR Science Test Overview
ONPAR Science provides students with a more linguistically appropriate assessment tool, allowing ELLs to better demonstrate their science ability.
The Obtaining Necessary Parity and Academic Rigor (ONPAR) assessment has been designed for ELLs in the early stages of English language acquisition. It is a computer-based test that utilizes features such as graphic illustrations and animations to convey information, and allows students to respond to test items using features such as drag-and-drop and model-building capabilities. These computerized mechanisms lower the linguistic barriers posed by traditional paper-and-pencil assessments. Traditional item types with heavy English reading loads are exchanged for more innovative item types that utilize dynamic properties and user interactions while preserving the cognitive complexity and content of items on conventional tests.
Versions of ONPAR have been developed to assess mathematics and science skills. The mathematics assessment covers content standards in grades 4 and 7 and the science assessment covers content standards in grades 4 and 8. Both assessments use the same onscreen design, computer interface and similar item types. "
Once Upon a School - Who we are
This site is an online initiative developed in response to author and philanthropist Dave Eggers' 2008 TED Prize wish to inspire and collect the stories of private citizens engaged in their local public schools. Each year, three individuals are granted the TED Prize, which provides winners with a wish to change the world, $100,000 in seed money, and the support of the TED community in making the wish come true.
Mastery Charter School - Mastery Model
We align assessments to clear objectives and use assessment data to direct instruction. We utilize a mastery-based grading system and a scaffolded course structure that addresses students at their incoming skill level, yet holds all students to a single college preparatory graduation standard.
Mastery creates an achievement-focused school culture by sweating the small stuff while fostering meaningful, personalized relationships between students and adults. To support the transition to a high expectations culture, we explicitly teach students problem-solving and social-emotional skills. All students receive workplace skills training and participate in internships to ensure they develop the real world skills required for college and the global economy. In short, Mastery insists on high expectations and high support so all students can achieve success.
About Our Program
At the heart of the program are a neighbourhood infant and parent who visit the classroom every three weeks over the school year. A trained ROE Instructor coaches students to observe the baby's development and to label the baby's feelings. In this experiential learning, the baby is the "Teacher" and a lever, which the instructor uses to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. This "emotional literacy" taught in the program lays the foundation for more safe and caring classrooms, where children are the "Changers". They are more competent in understanding their own feelings and the feelings of others (empathy) and are therefore less likely to physically, psychologically and emotionally hurt each other through bullying and other cruelties. In the ROE program children learn how to challenge cruelty and injustice. Messages of social inclusion and activities that are consensus building contribute to a culture of caring that changes the tone of the classroom. The ROE Instructor also visits before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. Research results from national and international evaluations of ROE indicate significant reductions in aggression and increases in pro-social behaviour.

Urban Assembly :: Destination : College :: School Themes
The Urban Assembly identifies themes that excite students and encourage them to recognize the connections between academic achievement, college and careers. Research shows that drawing such connections in adolescence significantly increases the likelihood that a young man or woman will complete college. We integrate a school’s theme into every aspect of the curriculum so that it not only illustrates the relevance of academic concepts but also helps students imagine themselves as successful working professionals.
National Academy Foundation
he National Academy Foundation (NAF) is an acclaimed national network of high school career academies predominately based in urban districts-schools within schools-with rigorous, career-themed curricula created with current industry and educational expertise. National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM) is an NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis). The project includes dissemination and extensive internal and external evaluation.
Education Week: Why We're Still 'At Risk'
Why We're Still 'At Risk'
The Legacy of Five Faulty Assumptions
Dr. Judy Willis’ RAD Teaching Connections from Neuroscience Research to the Classroom | Psychology Today Blogs
As a neurologist who became distressed by the epidemic of referrals I was getting to evaluate children for ADD, OCD, petit mal staring spell epilepsy, oppositional-defiant syndrome, etc. I investigated the potential source of this huge jump in referrals. The kids, when I evaluated them, usually didn't have any of these conditions. The cause, as I observed was in the change in classrooms geared to homogenized, sometimes "teacher proof" teach-to-the-test and overstuffed curriculum. I went back to university, got my teaching credential and masters of education and for the past 9 years have taught elementary and middle school, college and grad school. I now teach middle math teacher, write books, articles, and give presentations/professional development workshops about using brain research as a bridge to neuro-logical classroom strategies, and consult with Goldie Hawn for the Mindful Awareness curriculum her foundation is developing for schools.

4. Hacking Education: Exploring the Intersection of Web2.0 and the Education Business
Idit speaking at the Hacking Education Conference
On March 6th, Union Square Capital, a leading venture capital firm in NYC, invited technologists, education leaders, and entrepreneurs to talk about "hacking education" for a day. Twenty pages of Tweets from in-person and virtual participants were generated during the event.
Key thoughts that were shared include:
* Web2.0 transfers control from institutions to individuals; In the future, the student (and parents) will take control of all education choices -- schools, teachers, classes, even curriculum.
* Alternative education (homeschooling, charter schools, online schools, on-demand learning) is on the rise nationwide and worldwide. We are just at the start of that trend.
self_assessment (application/pdf Object)
This survey explores the influence methods you use when trying to resolve challenging and persistent problems. To begin, we’ll ask you
to think of a problem that you’re currently trying to solve but haven’t been able to.
As you select the problem, don’t choose a situation where merely persuading another person to make a different choice is all that’s
required. It should be a situation where you need people to break long-standing behaviors that are supported by a variety of sources.
