Rudd rejects buy Australia push | Herald Sun

Swan, unions at odds over Buy Australia push - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

    Unions say a Buy Australia campaign is needed to help local companies hit by the global recession.

  • A PLAN to build a regional centre at Wangaratta to train medical graduates and retain health expertise in the North East and Riverina has been given a boost with the Victorian Government agreeing to fund a feasibility study.

Govt warns against swine flu parties

  • The federal government has warned against people attending swine flu parties to catch the virus and develop immunity before it can mutate into a more severe form.
  • Ms Roxon said a healthy debate was underway about when authorities in Australia should allow swine flu to run its course.


    She said there would be less concern about allowing that to happen once experts had more confidence it was always going to be a mild illness.


    But she warned: "I just don't think we are at that point yet."

Call to close schools - Weekly Times Now

  • VICTORIA should immediately close every school for a week to slow the progress of the virus, a federal government influenza adviser has warned.
  • "We're at the stage now in Victoria where a blanket closure of all schools and pre-schools should be on the agenda and a decision needs to be made quickly," Professor MacIntyre told The Weekend Australian.

  • HEALTH authorities have defended their decision not to move to the next phase in combating the spread of swine flu as the virus yesterday hit rural Victoria for the first time.

Australian disaster review &squo;kept secret&squo;, Bushfires Royal Commission told | Herald Sun

  • A NATIONAL review into Australia's response to catastrophic disasters was kept secret because of concerns it would cause fear in the community.
  • The review, written by Mr Pearce when he worked in the office of Victoria's Emergency Services Commissioner, worked on four scenarios:

    *  A cyclone hitting Cairns;

    *  An earthquake striking Western Australia;
     
    *  A tsunami on the New South Wales coast; and, 

    *  An influenza pandemic.

    The report found that in any if the scenarios there was a likelihood authorities would be overwhelmed by the event.
