In the early 1990s, the cassava mosaic virus attacked 80 per cent of the country. Before the epidemic, Uganda had produced 3.5 million metric tonnes of cassava annually, but it dropped to just 0.5 metric tonnes, costing the economy $60 million a year.

Ukiruguru Institute [for agricultural research for the Lake and Western Zone] have warned. They have now recommended alternative food crops to be grown without delay, warning that there will be no cassava plants in the area a year from now.

A meeting of Africa's leading cassava breeders zeroed in on actions needed to stop the rapid spread of cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). The resurgent crop disease has already caused a low-grade famine in northern Mozambique, and led farmers in Zanzibar to largely abandon cultivation of the critical food crop. Breeders from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique all noted the rising threat of the disease to small-scale farmers in their areas.

After five years of relief from the cassava Mosaic disease, another disease has emerged in Mukono district. The disease which poses a threat of famine and poverty was identified by the Agriculture officer of Mukono Doreen kataama as cassava Brown Streak virus.
