Sri Lanka mdg GOALS and malnutrition
The World Bank, in its latest report on childhood under-nutrition in Sri-Lanka, notes that the country has experienced a marked improvement in the nutritional status of young children over the past two decades, becoming the country with the lowest prevalence of underweight children in South Asia. Accordingly, aggregate trends (1993-2000) in underweight rates suggest that Sri Lanka was likely to achieve its Millennium Development Goal target of 19% prevalence of underweight children by 2015.

The report also observed that the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) has in place a National Food and Nutrition Policy (2006-2010), whose goal is to address the continuing problem of child under-nutrition, regional disparities in nutritional indicators and emerging nutrition problems. Its programmatic response to malnutrition has consisted of three broad strategies: direct food assistance, the integrated package of maternal health and nutrition services under the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition (MOHN) poverty reduction programmes. In addition, smaller micronutrient deficiency control and focused behavior change communication programmes also exist.

"The scale of the malnutrition problem in Malawi is clearly very large and, given its consequences for economic development and child survival, calls for immediate and large-scale action," said Aida Girma, UNICEF Resident Representative.
