To the Heavens From the Jungle’s Edge - NYTimes.com
Interesting piece about Kourou, French Guiana. I visited this country in the late 1990s and this French space station is a big part of what goes on (would be interesting to know how much of GDP it is responsible for).
Editorial Observer - Map Upon Map - New Dimensions in What Maps Can Do - NYTimes.com
I started using GIS in 1988. This guy is just now discovering what some of us have known for 20 years or more. I like the discussion of how we think about the environment around us. In GIS, this is topology, something that many users of the technology may

I could, if I put my mind to it, lay down a map of all the fencing on my farm, where the posts stand, where the wires intersect, where the electricity enters and where the repairs are needed. I could map out the circular spots where the pigs have lived over the years, as if they were ancient settlements. But in the end I would only be mapping it for myself, and the map I need is already in my head.
AgroAtlas - Home
-
The Former Soviet Union has a rich agricultural heritage. In 2003 our project set out to develop a Russian-English Agricultural Atlas that covers the area of the Former Soviet Union. Scheduled to be completed in 2009, the Atlas will illustrate the historic distribution of economic plants and their pests in this important region of the world.
The Atlas is being compiled by a team of Russian scientists who are reviewing historic and current literature, herbarium specimens, and seed and insect collections. The Atlas will be released on a DVD-ROM and will be interactive; consisting of maps, biological descriptions, illustrations and reference lists that can be queried and combined with our built-in user-friendly GIS interface.

anthrome_map_v1.jpg (JPEG Image, 1620x938 pixels) - Scaled (57%)
This great new map shows anthropogenic biomes. I like the premise. The eco region maps are as if these places had no people. This map says that since there are very few wild places left, it does not make much sense to talk about natural biomes.
What’s Your Consumption Factor? - Jared Diamond
Somewhat interesting piece by Jared Diamond. Certainly, wasteful consumption needs to be curtailed. I think we need a Marshall plan for this....

Terra ETL Blog: The Robinson Projection: Not shaped like an Egg
-
The Robinson Projection came into being in 1963 and was introduced by Dr. Arthur H. Robinson.
This projection can be classified as a pseudo-cylindrical projection because of its straight parallels, along each of which the meridians are spaced evenly. The central meridian is also a straight line and all other meridians are curved.
