Technology literacy is increasingly becoming an explicit goal of schools throughout the country. But few educators, parents, or policymakers have a clear idea of what that phrase means.

- Older students must eventually come to grips quite consciously with the profound and pervasive impacts that technologies of all kinds -- from the simplest to the most complex -- have had, and will have, in their own lives and on entire societies.
- Developing the capacity to think critically, for one's self, about the entire realm of designing, using, and adapting technologies to serve personal, social, and ecological goals in ways that will sustain life on Earth.
  - Like McCluhan's "The Medium IS the message," so go the tools of modern communicative technology: more than we realize, we are shaped --in our relationships, in our thinking, in our expectations-- by the internet and cell phone. TV started the job, loosening our hold on face-to-face forms of entertainment, and providing all the background for us to respond passively. But now the internet and cell phone are asking us to interact, but not face to face. And they provide us with immediate access to immense amounts of information, seducing us into thinking that makes us smart, or wise.
