State to award social networking grants in Middle East, Africa - Nextgov

  • The State Department recently unveiled a pilot program that will award up to $5 million in grants to expand the use of social networking technologies in the Middle East with the goal of increasing citizen engagement and civic participation.

In an announcement released on Sept. 25, the department said it will award five organizations between $500,000 and $2.5 million to expand the availability of social networking and new media capabilities in the Middle East and North Africa. The program is sponsored by the Middle East Partnership Initiative, part of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department.

…My heart’s in Accra » Twitter.org? and building models for social media

  • I observed earlier this year that the internet is helping us realize that the value of an ad impression is much, much lower than we believed they were in the age of newspapers. Clay Shirky has sharpened that argument and used it to make the case that newspapers will fail as a model before we’re able to invent a sufficient alternative.
  • I’d broaden that argument somewhat – services like Facebook and Twitter are emerging as critical pieces of social infrastructure. It may be worth thinking of them as public goods. We know a lot of different ways to provision public goods – states maintain them using taxation, private entities build them and charge access fees, communities build them and rely on user support, NGOs provide services and use a hybrid of user fees, donations and foundation support. I don’t think it’s crazy to think that this might be how we choose to build social networks in the future… or perhaps if any of the tools we rely on becomes less reliable.

MySpace to Unveil Integration With Sites Around the Web, Using Open Standards

  • First, as Facebook grows rapidly in both user numbers and integration with sites around the web through its similar product Facebook Connect, MySpace is no longer the center of the web for millions of people. This kind of product facilitates that kind of relationship, and offering outside developers write-access to MySpace will incentivize more of them to support ongoing user-connection with MySpace. The microformatted markup makes this a lot smarter than Facebook Connect, frankly.
  • Keller says that MySpace is working on and will soon deploy technology that closely monitors what kind of friend updates users show interest in. If I often click on your photos but never read your blog posts, or I am very interested in your book reviews but don't care about your events listings, then MySpace will feature those kinds of your updates in my friends' activity feeds more or less prominently. Knowing what kinds of activities are being brought in from other sites will help make that more possible. The same information will facilitate smarter recommendations of content you might like.

Report: Social Networks Growing while Other Social Media Sites Stagnate and Decline

  • the latest report shows that internet users are beginning to now center their digital life around social networks like Facebook, MySpace, and Orkut, choosing to share their content within these sites instead of on services with a single focus, like Blogger or Flickr.
  • Surprisingly, the only activity to see a dip is uploading videos to video sharing sites. Still, video watching is now seeing a high penetration rate among active internet users at 83%, a number consistent with last year. But when you look at how many people are uploading video to social networking sites, it's there that you see the growth. 33% upload videos to their social network profiles, up from 16.9% last year, as previously noted.

Social Media, Democracy and GDP – The Ushahidi Blog

Talking social media and politics with Ethan Zuckerman | Net Effect

Ethan vs Evgeny. Heheh. Fun. My experience with Evgeny is that he thinks common people making their own opinion is usually not the best scenario (to put it mildly). A bit on Egypt towards the end.

How Facebook Could Create a Revolution, Do Good, and Make Billions

  • The VRM model says, "I, the consumer, will tell you, the vendor, the terms under which I am willing to buy your product or service." A lovely idea. Consumers who have felt burned for decades would love it. It would do particularly well right now, when times are tough, and particularly in emerging markets where Facebook is growing and in which traditional consumer marketers (i.e. US marketers) are not interested because the consumers there are not rich enough.
