شهد عام 1938 موجة من الاضرابات والاعتصامات بين عمال الصناعات المختلفة وخاصة بين عمال النسيج الذين بدأ عود نضالهم يشتد لياخذوا مكان الطليعة مع عمال النقل فى النضال العمالى . وفى منتصف عام 1938 شهدت البلاد الاضراب العمالى الضخم الذى قام به عمال النسيج فى المحلة . قد قام هذا الاضراب فجاة وقادته لجنة سرية للاحتجاج على الظروف السيئة التى كان يعمل فيها عمال النسيج فى شركة مصر بالمحلة الكبرى

وكان الاضراب عنيفا غاية العنف و حطم العمال الالات وبعض الابنية , واستخدمت الحكومة قوات الجيش والبوليس فى القضاء على الاضراب , وحدثت مجزرة رهيبة جرح فيها المئات والقى القبض على 150 من العمال قدموا للمحاكمة . وحكم على 50 منهم بالسجن , وقد استمر هذا الاضراب حوالى شهرين ..

أنا حضرت جلسة للجنة التحضيرية ضمت عمال مصبغة أموسيتو و مصنع المصابح في 10 رمضان، و عمال من طنطا للكتان. العمال عموما مركزين على الإدارة الذاتية، و النشطاء الاشتراكيين مركزين على بناء حركة واسعة و رفع شعارات تجمع الكل كحد أدنى للأجور، لدرجة أننا وصلنا أن الإدارة الذاتية أداة من ضمن أدوات كالإضراب و الاعتصام تهدف لعودة المصنع للدولة.

This strike is the first one to ever be authorized by the General Union for Textile Workers. Commenting as to why the general union authorized this strike and not any other strike since 1957, el-Gohary said "this is a special case. In its attempts to reclaim these workers' rights, the labor minister and the president of the ETUF had been engaged in negotiations with the company over the course of the past three years. However, the company's administration failed to respond. Moreover, they have been threatening to take punitive measures against these mistreated workers, that's why we moved to authorize this strike."
El-Gohary concluded by saying "we are currently considering the cancellation of the Textile Holding Company's contract with the investors, or returning the Tanta Company to state-ownership. If this is not feasible and the company is liquidated then we demand that the workers should be given proper compensations and should granted their full entitlements and rights.
