The South Bank Show: the last bastion of civilisation on ITV - Telegraph
I think Heffer and the Torygraph have a semi-hidden agenda, but superficially there's not much to disagree with.
(the semi-hidden agenda being the convenient amnesia about the scandalous auctioning of ITV licences that punished high-quality Thames TV for its hard-hitting documentaries and dramas and allowed in the Carltonisation of ITV that spread like a virus to other broadcasters)

Clef Notes: County supervisor asks Los Angeles Opera to remove Wagner focus from 'Ring' fest - The Baltimore Sun’s classical music critic Tim Smith blogs about the sonic art, local and beyond - baltimoresun.com
I read elsewhere that the stupid man who wants to ban this is a Lutheran and obviously knows fuck all about Luther's gross anti-semitism. Stupid people really should keep their mouths shut.
County supervisor revives debate over Wagner's 'Ring' | Culture Monster | Los Angeles Times
"Antonovich, who represents the 5th District, which covers much of northern Los Angeles County, suggested that the festival incorporate other composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Schubert, Schumann, Meyerbeer and Mendelssohn."
Yeah, and Michael Jackson and, like, whatever, because themes are like that.
Can't beat a bit of politically-motivated censorship

LA Wagnerfest
'Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich is demanding that Los Angeles Opera discontinue the Ring Festival L.A. planned for next year, calling Richard Wagner a, “Nazi composer.” '
I suggest that he study a bit of history or else STFU.

mostly opera...: The Nibelungen Ring in 45 seconds
In German but, come on, it's 45 seconds and very very visual!
Out West Arts: Stop Your Sobbing
An amusing tale from the pre-launch of New York's future Ring production - and the inevitable opposition to it. I don't know what the fuss is. It's bound to have scenery, so they can applaud that. What else do they want?
Summer is Coming In: Spring at the Met
I was dazzled nonetheless by the fine vocal shape Placido Domingo is in: at 68, he sounded like a tenor in the prime of his career... He continues to surprise me: just when I'm ready to write him off as a sell-out (with his latest album Amore Infinito containing collaborations with such luminaries as Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Vanessa Williams and Katherine Jenkins), he shows how serious an artist he is by pulling out all the stops in this one. If nothing else, Mr Domingo is a versatile guy.
The Opera Tattler: Die Walküre at the Met
Diction aside, Domingo was incredible as Siegmund, very heroic, with lovely high notes and fine volume.
Domingo at the MET last night - rec.music.opera | Google Groups
I am not really looking at cast lists and so sat in the first act of
Walkere without knowing the cast, except for Pape. I was really
stunned at the end to learn it was Domingo. He sounded extremely (I
will not say unnaturally - that would be wrong) youthful, and there
wasn't a hint of wobble or difficulty, and in fact I thought it had to
be some singer I didn't know in his 40s, I would have guessed. There
was in fact some underpowered singing sometimes at the top fo the
range - the Notungs were not very forceful and sounded far back - but
it was an amazing performance overall, I thought. The only giveaway as
to age was really in the last couple of minutes of the act, where
Levine seemed to put on a bit extra speed to help a tiring singer, as
I think he generally as with Domingo in this opera.
Out West Arts: The Once and Future King
let’s talk about something positive like Placido Domingo. He’s simply electrifying. Here he was again doing Siegmund as no one else can in the world right now, creating far more flames than all the red lights, smoke and paper in Act III. The audience is wild for him and I must admit, despite the ridiculous wig, he was mighty, mighty impressive singing circles around everyone else. It's the fourth time I've heard him sing the part this month, and it's still amazing. He’s unrestrained here, able to expressively act his heart out, which he does.
Wagner vs. Coachella | Fierce and Nerdy
Opera vs Indie festival. Placido vs Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney
I was blown away by Placido Domingo, don't get me wrong everyone was really good, but you can definitely understand what all the fuss is about. At 68-years-old, Domingo's voice is phenomenal capturing strength and weakness, arrogance and humility sometimes in what seemed to be the same breath.
Opera Today : Die Walküre at Los Angeles Opera
The Los Angeles Opera audiences seem to have decided that no matter how they may really feel about Achim Freyer’s “performance art” staging of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, the singers and musicians are giving them at long last a chance to hear these monumental works at the Dorothy Chandler.
Domingo has owned the role of Siegmund for sometime, and he is not ready to relinquish ownership. From first to last, he sounded magnificent.
