Now that school’s out, kids are looking for Web sites that are just plain fun. This 2009 Webby Award-winning site—and homage to abstract painter Jackson Pollock—is perfect for the start of summer vacation. It’s all about fun, color, and, most of all, creativity. Kids don’t need instructions to start “painting” online, but here are a few hints to pass along to them: moving your mouse slowly or quickly over the screen creates different-sized blobs and lines; moving your mouse in different patterns (circles or zig zags, for instance) creates different effects; clicking your mouse changes the paint colors; and continuously clicking while moving your mouse around the screen creates a really interesting and beautiful effect.
To have your work of art signed and dated by creator Miltos Manetas, press the “Delete” key. Kids can also print their completed works of art. This site is wonderfully simple (even toddlers can create amazing images), wonderfully creative (teens will find that they can, with a bit of patience and practice, create subtle and real works of art) and also wonderfully addictive—just the thing to keep kids of all ages not only entertained, but also challenged to create something new and beautiful each time they visit this truly amazing site. (And if you’re wondering who created the image above… I did!)
