Where Will Android Go Next? - GigaOM
When it comes to its new mobile operating system, Android, Google’s dreams go beyond just mobile phones. Indeed, the company is hoping that the open-source version of the software will eventually find its way into a panoply of devices.
Android is more than just a mobile OS. The OS comes with middleware and key applications, making it a complete environment that can be modified for other users. It has a robust web browser (based on WebKit), the ability to handle 2D and 3D graphics, and is able to read all sorts of audio, video and image files. As a result it can be extended into any number of consumer electronic devices that needed a robust software system.
Many ask the question of how iPhone Web browsing-eMail-apps can be added to the ACN Iris Videophone. Well, the entire Android subset of IP systems is open source and available for the taking. There is no technical reason why Iris wouldn't include anything the iPhone offers, including a Google enabled Web browser, eMail and calendar access.

Replace or Re-Purpose? The Belgian Desktop Pilot Study
Here is the summary of the Belgian desktop pilot study.
The conclusion echoed the findings of Massachusetts and California; they found that they could not use OpenOffice as a replacement for MSOffice. Although there were many reasons sighted, i think they all fit under the larger framework that MSOffice is the center of what turned out to be a sprawling desktop productivity ecosystem.
A List Apart: Articles: Printing a Book with CSS: Boom!
HTML is the dominant document format on the web and CSS is used to style most HTML pages. But, are they suitable for off-screen use? Can CSS be used for serious print jobs? To find out, we decided to take the ultimate challenge: to produce the next edition of our book directly from HTML and CSS files. In this article we sketch our solution and quote from the style sheet used. Towards the end we describe the book microformat (boom!) we developed in the process.

Cisco Mashes Up Collaboration | InternetNews Realtime IT News
David Knight of Cisco WebEX:
"Lots of people understand that collaboration is the driver for the next wave of productivity improvements," Knight said. "The real opportunity now is to automate the unstructured interactions between knowledge workers. What we're seeing is varying degrees of success in people recognizing the efficiency gains, and thus, varying degrees of adoption. The ones that are successful are the ones that are tying collaboration to the business process. "

Why Google Isn't Enough - Forbes.com
One key refrain that expresses this trend is heard in companies around the world: "Why can't we have a Google inside the four walls of our company?" While at first this seems like a good idea, the problem of using search inside a company is much more complicated than just indexing documents, throwing up a search box and asking people if they feel lucky.
This week, JargonSpy explores just what "enterprise search" means and why it is a complicated challenge that is becoming increasingly urgent for most companies to solve.
-
There are three key ways that successful implementations of enterprise search differ from the search we use on the Web: richer user interfaces, business process context and heterogeneous content.
ongoing · Purple Pilcrows
First of all, I modified the approach by replacing # with ¶ per the suggestion of another Simon. Whereas # suggests Web anchors, it only suggests that to Web hacks, while ¶ has a long typographical history as a paragraph marker. Plus, it’s kind of pretty and it’s officially called a Pilcrow, which you gotta love. Now that the anchor is so evanescent, I wonder if it might work in a shade slightly less ethereally pale. ¶

- The ECM market became white hot.
With the big-time players in IT (EMC, IBM, Oracle) making acquisition plays left and right, Microsoft realized that there was a huge revenue stream to be tapped into. But why did Microsoft not jump on the acquisition bandwagon and instead chose to invest in its existing product? The answer to that question can be found in the next bullet point. - The Microsoft Office productivity suite maintained its dominance on the desktop.
Although applications like OpenOffice attempted to usurp market share from the ubiquitous Word and Excel, organizations across the globe continued to standardize on the .doc and .xls formats for word processing and spreadsheets respectively. Therefore, who better to provide a content management system for these formats than the company who invented them. However, the third trend shows where Microsoft’s real challenge came from. - The rise of the online desktop, Google Apps in particular, strikes the first semblance of fear in the Redmond-based giant.

WebKit Meta: A new standard for in-game web content | Alp Toker
As many know, i've moved all my attention to WebKit and thw webkit "fixed/flow" document model as an alternative to Microsoft's proprietary XAML "fixed/flow". Webkit is the default layout for iPhone, Safari and the Adobe RIA runtime (Flex/Flash/AiR/Acrobat). It's just a short hop from WebKit to VisualForce Pages, the default document model for SalesForce.com developers. The Meta announcement further demonstrates how powerful the WebKit design is. It's will be worthwhile keepign an eye on the Meta JavaScript SDK-Runtime as a nice addition to WebKit. Good stuff!

What is the Role of Government on the Web? Part 1 of 3
Gerry McGovern discusses the problems with Government web sites, and the cost of maintaining them. Wha twe really need is wikiWORD on the government desktop to generate knowledge worker content, and innerWIKI search on the server side to create end user specific web pages. Once again the great one has his finger on the pulse.

“Rather than struggling, as it currently does, to design sites that meet each end-user need, we argue that the executive branch should focus on creating a simple, reliable and publicly accessible infrastructure that exposes the underlying data. Private actors, either nonprofit or commercial, are better suited to deliver government information to citizens.”
Yahoo!'s problem? It's too 'dispensable' | The Open Road - The Business and Politics of Open Source by Matt Asay - CNET Blogs
Well put!

Yahoo! needs to find those indispensable experiences for its users. It hasn't found them yet. More accurate advertising would be a great start, but how about focusing where Google isn't (yet): Enterprise. Give enterprises a credible, open alternative to Microsoft.
