Future of learning: LMS or SNS? « Connectivism
Interesting article about limitations of Learning Mangement Systems (content-focused) with respect to social networking, collaboration, teamwork (Social Networking Systems - SNS). Posits the success of Facebook as evidence that social networking is important not only in life but also education. Facebook as a model for future online education? Not until they get the privacy thing fixed.

Open Book Exams Become Open Internet Exams in Denmark
The emphasis of the tests is on finding and applying information rather than on reciting facts - the way knowledge is used in the 'real world.' Also much more time-consuming to grade.
-
What I like about the story's concept is that the questions Danish students are being asked require them to use knowledge rather than regurgitate knowledge.
-
it's more important to note that the emphasis of the exams is placed on application of knowledge rather than recitation of knowledge.
Students Unimpressed with Faculty Use of Ed Tech -- Campus Technology
Students and educators are in agreement that technology is an important adjunct to education - but students are not impressed with how well instructors understand and integrate technology into their classes.
-
According to new research released Monday, only 38 percent of students indicated that their instructors "understand technology and fully integrate it into their classes." Students also rated that lack of understanding as "the biggest obstacle to classroom technology integration."

On the importance of feedback in distance education
It's shocking to read that 90% of the students surveyed received no feedback on their online work beyond the grades on midterm and final exams. Most thought it was important to their educational process; a minority claimed that they did not need it. The article ends with suggestions for providing feedback.
Web2.0 Mediated Competence - Implicit Educational Demands on Learners

Add Sticky NoteStudents are therefore required to manoeuvre in a field of interacting, yet conflicting demands, and the assessment of their competence stands the risk of being more of an evaluation of the skill to so manoeuvre than of skills and knowledge explicitly pursued in the course.
- It concerns me when using online technologies (including WebCT) in teaching that a significant amount of time is taken from study of the course content to train the students how to use the technologies. When students are struggling to use the technology, they are not engaging with the course material itself. And yet the technologies have the potential for greatly enriching their learning process. ISEDJ.6(64).Sendall.pdf (application/pdf Object)
"Abstract: Web 2.0 tools are collaborative Internet applications that allow for facilitation of communications between individuals and organizations. Examples of Web 2.0 tools include blogs, wikis, Second Life, and social networking. This manuscript reviews classroom implementation of Web 2.0
tools at three Northeastern US universities. The importance of Web 2.0 instruction is examined via literature review and pre and post class testing of the students involved in the courses. It was found that knowledge of Web 2.0 skills is generally regarded as being very important. Students who took
the course and were educated on Web 2.0 skills increased both their knowledge and comfort level after the course. A detailed analysis of student perceptions both prior to taking the course and after instruction are reviewed."
7 things you should know about Flip Camcorders (Educause)
"The camcorders are simple, with a lens and microphone on the front and a video screen and a few buttons on the back. These devices are entirely automatic, without the need—or the option—to change manual settings. A spring-loaded USB plug on the device allows it to attach directly to a computer for file transfers. Built-in software enables video transfer for processing, storage, or sharing on sites like YouTube and Facebook. For about the price of a low-end digital camera, the Flip produces up to an hour of video that is surprisingly good for the price and more than adequate for web viewing."
