Looking at the remarkable artefacts of Elisabeth Tonnard
Last weekend was another small artbook fair in New York at which I made an exciting discovery in the work of a young Dutch poet and visual artist named Elisabeth Tonnard. Tonnard has been in residence at Rochester’s Visual Studies Workshop and has created several artist books over the past several years. One title that was a must own for me was her book In This Dark Wood published in 2008. I am one year late to add this to my Best of 2009 list but since I make the rules here, I will happily add it anyway.
Looking at the remarkable artefacts of Ashley Jordan Gordon
With passion as intense as her photos, budding photographer Ashley Jordan Gordon recently caught the attention of London’s National Portrait Gallery with her image called, "Girl on Kingsland Road." Shot at an East End music festival (pictured above), the 24-year-old caught the "convergence of the roiling crowd" as well as a fleeting moment of mutual awareness with her subject.
Looking at the remarkable artefacts of Stanislav Ginzburg
Stanislav Ginzburg was born and raised in Orenburg, Russia. He immigrated to the US at the age of 15 where he later received his BFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design. His work has been included in several group shows at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Deitch Projects, NY Studio Gallery, and other venues. His latest project, Tales from Vienna Woods, was on view at Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art gallery in NYC last summer. This work represents a dark and ominous exploration of a mythical forest which serves as a playground for artist’s imagination and solemn narrative vignettes. Stanislav currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Looking at the artefacts of Zhang Xiao
Zhang Xiao is a freelance photographer living and working in Chongqing, China. His photographs, with their vignetting and muted colors, help document a Chinese culture in the midst of societal change. Contrasting the traditional lives of older generations with the youth of today, Xiao's "They" series has managed to remain free of nostalgic reference and politicization in it's depictions of everyday life in China. Zhang has participated in several International photography festivals and has shown his work at the GIM Gallery in Bremen, Germany.
