SEOmoz | SEO Guide: International Versions of Websites
This structure of URLs is one element of a problem called internationalization. The internet evolved (or was intelligently designed for those not down with the Darwin ;-p) in a way that made TLDs (Top Level Domains like .com, .info, or .org) almost completely useless for determining the intent of a website. (The exception to this is regulated TLDs like .gov, .edu and some country specific TLDs) In theory, a .com is supposed to only be used by companies and .org by nonprofit organizations. Obviously, this does not happen. Combine this with the current trend to misuse country specific TLDs (ccTLDs) for shorter domains names (Hint: Bit.ly has nothing to do with Libya) and you can easily see why the semantic value of TLDs has became a relatively poor metric for categorizing websites.
A List Apart: Articles: The Case for Content Strategy—Motown Style
Over the past year, the content strategy chatter has been building. Jeffrey MacIntyre gave us its raison d’être. Kristina Halvorson wrote the call to arms. Panels at SXSW, presentations at An Event Apart, and regional meetups continue to build the drum roll. But how do you start humming the content strategy tune to your own team and to your prospective clients? Listen up and heed Aretha Franklin. No, really.
SEOmoz | Whiteboard Friday - Matt Cutts on NoFollow
This week we've got a special treat! Live from the halls of SES San Jose, our own Jen Lopez sits down with the one-and-only Matt Cutts to discuss NoFollow.
As we all know, there was some controversy about Google's shifting views on nofollow earlier this year. So now that some time has passed and Big G has refined their position, what would Matt recommend to sites that have lots of nofollow tags already in place? Watch this exclusive interview to find out.
SEOmoz | Perfecting Keyword Targeting & On-Page Optimization
If you're in SEO, you probably hear this question a lot. Sadly, there's no cut and dry answer, but there are sets of best practices we can draw from and sharpen to help get close. In this blog post, I'm going to share our top recommendations for achieving on-page, keyword-targeting "perfection," or, at least, close to it. Some of these are backed by data points, correlation studies and extensive testing while others are simply gut-feelings based on experience. As with all things SEO, we recommend constant testing and refinement, though this knowledge can help you kick-start the process.
SEOmoz | Canonical URL Tag - The Most Important Advancement in SEO Practices Since Sitemaps
The announcement from Yahoo!, Live & Google that they will be supporting a new "canonical url tag" to help webmasters and site owners eliminate self-created duplicate content in the index is, in my opinion, the biggest change to SEO best practices since the emergence of Sitemaps. It's rare that we cover search engine announcements or "news items" here on SEOmoz, as this blog is devoted more towards tactics than breaking headlines, but this certainly demands attention and requires quick education.
SEO: Estimating Sales Potential from Keywords and Phrases | Practical eCommerce
The perception that search engine optimization is a limitless source of free traffic and sales is one reason that SEO campaigns sometimes fail to live up to expectations. Yes, SEO efforts can deliver excellent returns on investment. But how much expected return is realistic? This article will help you estimate the potential growth in traffic and sales that SEO efforts can drive to your site.
Ecommerce Know-How: Information Architecture to Improve SEO and Usability | Practical eCommerce
Taking lessons from two marketing disciplines, online retailers and their web designers can build a well structured Internet store organized into themes or categories that will make it easy for shoppers and search engines alike to find important information and product pages.
In this Ecommerce Know-How, I will briefly define search engine optimization (SEO) and information architecture (IA), describe one of the many places where these marketing specialties intersect, and explain how easy and natural thematic structure and linking really is. I've also included a video. I should point out that this technique is very intuitive, and many site owners or designers are probably using it to some extent naturally. We are simply putting a name to these natural tendencies.
Track Outgoing Clicks in Google Analytics with jQuery
Ian Pitts sent me this trick a while back and I’m just getting around to publishing it. Thank Ian!
Google Analytics (intro video here) is powerful stuff, but one notable lacking feature is data on outgoing clicks. If you are using jQuery, plop this code on your page and you’ll be tracking outgoing clicks in no time.

SEOmoz | Footer Link Optimization for Search Engines & User Experience
Site after site that I visit lately has been showing a tendency for using footer links to run their internal SEO link structure and anchor text optimization. While this practice, in years past, held value, today I rarely ever recommend it (and yes, SEOmoz itself will be moving away from using our footer for category links soon). Here's why:
Site map | drupal.org
This module provides a site map that gives visitors an overview of your site. It can also display the RSS feeds for all blogs and categories. Drupal generates the RSS feeds automatically but few seems to be aware that they exist.
The site map can display the following items:
* A message to be displayed above the site map
* The latest blogs.
* Any books that optionally will be displayed fully expanded.
* Any menus that will be displayed fully expanded.
* Any categories, i.e vocabulary, with all the terms expanded. Optionally with node counts and RSS feeds.
* A syndication block, the "more" link goes to the site map.
Global Redirect | drupal.org
What?
GlobalRedirect is a simple module which…
1. Checks the current URL for an alias and does a 301 redirect to it if it is not being used.
2. Checks the current URL for a trailing slash, removes it if present and repeats check 1 with the new request.
3. Checks if the current URL is the same as the site_frontpage and redirects to the frontpage if there is a match.
4. Checks if the Clean URLs feature is enabled and then checks the current URL is being accessed using the clean method rather than the 'unclean' method. (Currently only in DEV, will be in 1.3 soon)
Why?
Once enabled, an alias provides a nice clean URL for a path on a site. However Drupal does not remove the old path (eg node/1234). The problem is that you now have two URLs representing the same content. This is dangerous territory for duplicate pages which can get you sandboxed by the search engines!
How?
This module uses hook_init to interrupt the page load and the a alias lookups. If any of the above rules apply then the appropriate action is taken. If no rules apply then the page load continues uninterrupted. An example of this in use is on the site it was developed for. http://www.sportbusiness.com/node/160559 will redirect to http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/160559/lagardere-sets-up-sports-division due to the alias setup on this site.
Meta tags | drupal.org
This module allows you to set some meta tags for each node, view or panels page.
Giving more attention to the important keywords and/or description on some of your nodes allows you to get better search engine positioning (given that you really only provide the keywords which exist in the node body itself, and do not try to lie).
The module may also be known under following names: nodewords or node (key)words. Meta tags is the preferred name.
XML Sitemap | drupal.org
XML Sitemap automatically creates a site map that conforms to the sitemaps.org specification. This helps search engines keep their search results up to date. XML Sitemap replaces the Google Sitemap module written by Matthew Loar as part of Google Summer of Code 2005. Please check there for older versions.
Drupal Robots.txt File for SEO | Webmaster Tips
An important aspect of Drupal SEO is the robots.txt file. Drupal 5 was the first version of Drupal that came with a robots.txt file, but it still needs some modifications.
One of the most serious SEO problems with Drupal is duplicate content. With the addition of contributed modules it can get so bad that one might refer to it as druplicate content. (ow...)
A key element of SEO on sites is getting a good, clean crawl. A robots.txt file is important for a clean crawl because it tells robots where they aren't supposed to go. There are many places on a Drupal site that search engine crawlers shouldn't go.
Drupal SEO: How Duplicate Content Hurts Drupal Sites
Drupal's clean URLs give it a good reputation when it comes to SEO, but there's a lot more you can do under the hood to improve Drupal's search engine friendliness. Today I will show you some Drupal SEO tips to help you avoid duplicate content and boost your search engine ranking.
Drupal SEO: Google traffic chart
Proper search engine optimization allows you to tap into a significant source of new visitors. If you rank well for your keywords, you may find that search engine hits account for more traffic than all your other referrals combined. Unfortunately, most Drupal sites aren't performing as well as they could due to duplicate content.
