Giraffe Forum » Confusing menus and links: the web’s biggest challenge
To make menus and links simpler you have to think like a customer. You also have to reduce the number of links and focus on the task at hand.
SitePoint » More Crimes Against Hypertext
Back in Crimes Against Hypertext, I identified several common examples of poor hyperlinking. It generated an interesting discussion so I thought I’d write a follow-up, adding a few more examples and some solutions.
F84: Failure of Success Criterion 2.4.9 due to using a non-specific link such as "click here" or "more" without a mechanism to change the link text to specific text. | Techniques for WCAG 2.0
This failure describes a common condition where links such as "click here" or "more" are used as anchor elements where you need to have the surrounding text to understand their purpose and where there isn't any mechanism to make the destination clear by itself, such as a button to expand the link text.
Pixelshell | Blog » “Click Here” - Hyperlink Text That Works
Marketing Sherpa has recently published a study which resulted in some intriguing results. The key objective of the research was to see whether putting an instruction like “click here” in your link text would make the link more effective—would more people click on it?
Link Value Factors | Wiep.net
It's a known fact that no two links are equally the same, in this research I attempted to see every two links as equals. While this obviously makes it impossible to create a 100% accurate piece of content, this - together with the dozens of interesting comments- results in a document that might be of value for everybody who's somehow envolved in building links. The grain of salt that comes with this research is far being outweighed by the value of the present data.
While some might use this document for entertaining purposes only, these results and factors can be enterpreted by everybody as an indication that, while lots and lots of different factors come into play of the process, building links sure isn't rocket science.
It's way cooler.
SEOmoz | How to Find the Spam You're Linking To
Today, between meetings at the office, I had a brief IM chat with Jane, whose globetrotting ways have taken her to the UK for SMX London. Jane noted that our website - www.seomoz.org - was up for review on a search engine panel today, and received generally positive feedback from the engineers. One notable exception, however, was the fact that several engines commented that we were linking to a small handful of scuzzy, no-good, spamtacular sites (and that this was potentially hurting our performance in the results).
