Case study: the China Home Learning PC - 5/23/2006 - Electronic Business

  • personal computers in the home were largely perceived as a distraction to education, with the child being lured into playing games or wasting time on the Internet.
  • The chosen solution for parental control was a physical lock-and-key mechanism. The parent holds the key, which controls whether the activities of the user are confined to educational content only. This was a simple and familiar metaphor that parents readily understood.

  • to answer the question of design "success" requires that they answer that question of how the processes and artifacts of design help define what it means to be human. This "humanness" can range from how humans control the environment through tools (homo faber); how high-heeled shoes affect natural ways of walking; to moral issues of how participation in the design process empowers marginalized communities. In this space, the practice and theory of design anthropology has emerged.
