Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship

  • We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site.
  • "Networking" emphasizes relationship initiation, often between strangers. While networking is possible on these sites, it is not the primary practice on many of them, nor is it what differentiates them from other forms of computer-mediated communication (CMC).

Metaphors not only help us to think about the future; they are a resource deployed by a variety of actors to shape the future.”
  • I think what I like about the term ‘virtual knowledge’ is that it does capture the notion of ‘knowledge between people,’ the shared nature of knowledge, the different ways of doing that, getting into the –as you say– practices and situatedness of knowledge, which I think is an important dimension of our work.
