Kaution = returnable deposit

Provision = commission of an agent (Makler)

Ablösefrei = no charges for fixtures and fittings

Ablöse = charges for fixtures and fittings (e.g. kitchen left in)

BK (Betriebskosten) = operating costs

WaMa (Waschmaschine) = washing machine

Privat an Privat = private rental (i.e. no commission to be paid to a Makler)

Miete inkl. USt / MwSt = rent including VAT

Altbau = pre-war building (usually has high ceilings)

Neubau = post-1945 building (low ceilings)

Bad = Bath

Badewanne = bathtub

Du (Dusche) = shower

WZ (Wohnzimmer) = living room

EZ (Esszimmer) = dining room

SZ (Schlafzimmer) = bedroom

Vorraum = hall

WC = lavatory

WC im Gang = lavatory in the corridor (still occasionally happens in old houses)

Garc (Garconniere) = 1 room flat

Kabinet = smaller room (most importantly only has 1 window - a Zimmer has at least two)

Erdgeschoß = ground floor

Hochparterre = mezzanine floor

Aufzug = lift

x. Liftstock = on the xth floor, with lift

Kochnische = small/basic cooking facilities

Einbaukü (Einbauküche) = fitted kitchen

Parkettboden / Parkettzimmer = parquet flooring

hofseitig = facing into a courtyard (as opposed to onto the street)
