Digital Neighborhood Comes to the Aid of Abused Woman » Adrants
These are key points I want to highlight in this post:
"It worked because was very personal. It worked because Armano has developed deep relationships with many people online"
" It's that aspect of online social life which fueled this and which fuels social media. It's never really about the technology. It's about the people"
"Social media (or whatever you want to call it) has simply given us new ways to connect with people"
"With Armano's digital neighborhood, it was personal and when things are personal, they are meaningful."

I wonder how this would work if you were to accelerate the timeline; what about daily votes? what would be the logistics required to execute on it from a content perspective? but what about the level of interest and engagement you could generate..

Social Media Map, Social Media Marketing by Overdrive Interactive
This map is interesting in many different levels: because of the way it classifies (i.e. Groups versus platforms versus Social Networks?) and what is included (and not) under each classification (Is Facebook a platform? What about Wiki services such as Wetpaint?)
The Social Media space badly needs formal semantic definition; we need to speak the same language and mean the same things when we do it. This is one of my wishes for 2009

Marc Smith: Social dimension of social media
This is a lecture by Marc Smith; I believe about 6-7 months ago. Delivered with commanding knowledge and the always colorful style that distinguishes him.
A few points to highlight:
•3 ½ minutes into it; the notion of relationship & social media
•9 ½ minutes into it His take at given Social Media a Sociology Acceptable name: “Collective Goods produced through Computer Mediated Collective Action”; clearly the name will never stick.. however thinking about it that way helps better understand AND implement it. To understand the potential of the “computer mediated” you need to check the last few minutes (around minute 40)
•14 minutes into it he talks about the key difference between the one to one media (mail, 1:1 sms message) versus small/large groups creating media for small/large groups (i.e. Wikipedia is mostly a set of small groups creating media for large groups). About 24 minutes into it he re-visits Wikipedia & the “wisdom of the Chaperones”
•25 minutes into it he goes into his signature points: the visualization of Social Media holistically and discovery of behavior patterns. If you want the summary of it ff to minute 34.
•31 minutes into it he addresses the Caldwell versus Duncan influencer discussion.

Quoting McLeod (Gaping Void): "it's the conversatuons that happen around it that's interesting."
How many marketers would like to be able to create something that drives this level of enthusiasm and recognition? a key aspect to keep in mind (Quoting McLeod, Gaping Void): "it's the conversatuons that happen around it that's interesting"

This is our opportunity; lets change this from art into science
This is the main reason why I chose to join razorfish; to have the opportunity to work with many clients and guide (learn in the process as well) about the strategies that work; and how to measure them to ensure they are working.

Facebook Aims to Extend Its Reach Across the Web - NYTimes.com
Two comments on this one:
1)Indeed Faceboon Connect is a powerful capability; but in order for that power to be fully exerted we need Facebook to come up with better ways to keep our social networks tidily separate from each other: my High School friends do not care about the same information from me as my social Media Tribe; I need them to see different things from me. Facebook: please figure out how to make this easy for me! (hint: metadata).
2)Not everything in Social will revolve around the “Friendship”; Social has (at least) three pivots: The human pivot (we the ones having the social exchange), the object pivot (that around which we are congregating) and the metadata pivot (the data we associate to the relationships and objects, which can be expressively assign or inferred). Depending on the objective and situation we can choose to have our efforts take advantage of one or more of these pivots.
