Introducing ClipSearch « The Clipmarks Blog

  • Introducing ClipSearch

    April 10th, 2007<!-- by egoldstein --> · 2 Comments

This is a big one for us. So far, Clipmarks has relied solely on user-generated tags to power our search. But after a number of requests from our users, it finally sunk in, “why the heck aren’t we letting people do keyword searches based on the content inside of clips?” Talk about the easiest, most powerful way to keep track of the stuff you find online! Just clip things you find and have them automatically added to your own keyword searchable library. Each clipper is literally filtering the web to their liking and should have a search engine that lets them easily sort through it all. Brilliant! Well, today I am very excited to announce the introduction of ClipSearch!!

ClipSearch doesn’t only apply to each user’s library of clips. It also powers the search in the public library of clips on our site. So, anytime you want to find clips about something you’re interested in, you can find matching ones regardless of whether they have matching tags.

globeandmail.com: social bookmarking and clipping

  • But what if saving a link isn't enough? Sometimes when you're researching a particular subject, you might want to keep more than just a link and a paragraph of text from a particular page.
  • Another somewhat similar service is Diigo, which also has plug-ins for the major browsers that allow you to highlight content in a page (in Diigo's case it becomes yellow) and tag it with keywords. You can also add what amounts to a sticky note with comments, and then save it to Diigo's servers, where it is shared with other users. You can then go back to your account and see not just your own comments or highlighted sections from a site, but also the highlights and comments from any other Diigo user who also saved the page.

  • As a result, the good news is that you won’t have to open up your wallet, and the bad news is that you will want to be extra careful in selecting your provider, for it might not be around for very long.

  • we wish Diigo would autofill as we typed our search query.
  • Diigo's advanced search lets you scour the text of pages you've bookmarked--not just the basic titles, tags, and URLs that Del.icio.us goes through--as well as your own highlights and comments.

The Social Bookmarking Faceoff

  • Post to other bookmarking services, supports annotations with sticky notes, flexible
    blog integration.
A lot of options, might not be easy to learn for everyone, mixes a lot of things
    together.

I'm an avid user of social bookmarking. I’ve practically tried them all - these social bookmarking services pretty much have the same features. I am glad to see Diigo on your list. It really stands out and offers features like full-text search, highlight and annotation on the page, bookmarking-with-tagging quickly without waiting for an interface to load (big plus!) – serious information consumers will appreciate these power features.

Diiog also makes it very easy to integrate with other services. So it’s really the best one stop solution to allow you to simultaneously bookmark and continue to use whatever services you have been using, while taking advantage of its unique features.

There are a lot of nice resources out there, but very few tools I can't live without. Diigo is one that I can perform so many useful tasks in one convenient central location.

Paying the top DIGG/REDDIT/Flickr/Newsvine users (or "$1,000 a month for doing what you're already doing.")

  • The concept of "free" content producers, which I think WIRED called crowdsourcing, is going to be a short-lived joke. A loophole in the content business that will be closed by savvy startups which identify the top 5% of the audience and buy their time.
