    patent. Even "abstract ideas constituting disembodied concepts or

    truths" could be patented, it declared, as long as they performed a

    useful function. The useful function in this case was to produce "a

    final share price." In other words, the court ruled, software that

    merely manipulates numbers, juggling them and exchanging them and

    transforming them into other numbers, is producing something tangible.

    A powerful conclusion, in a digital age. It opened the floodgates.
