Free, as in Beer, by Lawrence Lessig - Wired 14.09: Posts

  • "Think free," the movement's founder, Richard Stallman puts it, "as in free speech, not free beer." You can charge whatever you want for free software. But what you can't do is lock up the knowledge that makes it run. Others must be allowed to learn from and tinker with it. No one is permitted a monopoly on the teaching that stands behind it.
  • The short list of these books is led by MIT professor Eric von Hippel's Democratizing Innovation.

the cluetrain manifesto

  • We are waking up and linking to each other. We are watching. But
    we are not waiting.
  • Our allegiance is to ourselves—our friends, our new allies
and acquaintances, even our sparring partners. Companies that
have no part in this world, also have no future.

Wired 15.04: The See-Through CEO

  • "You can't hide anything anymore," Don Tapscott says. Coauthor of The Naked Corporation, a book about corporate transparency, and Wikinomics, Tapscott is explaining a core truth of the see-through age: If you engage in corporate flimflam, people will find out.
  • Secrecy is dying. It's probably already dead.

new rules for the new economy - by kevin kelly - at wired

  • New Rules for the New Economy

    By Kevin Kelly

Twelve dependable principles for thriving in a turbulent world

  • The Digital Revolution gets all the headlines these days. But turning slowly beneath the fast-forward turbulence, steadily driving the gyrating cycles of cool technogadgets and gotta-haves, is a much more profound revolution - the Network Economy.

This emerging new economy represents a tectonic upheaval in our commonwealth, a social shift that reorders our lives more than mere hardware or software ever can. It has its own distinct opportunities and its own new rules. Those who play by the new rules will prosper; those who ignore them will not.

Rough Type: Nicholas Carr's Blog: Customer value and the network effect

  • Customer value and the network effect

    March 08, 2007

  • What's the value of a customer who doesn't pay you anything? If you're running a hot dog stand, the answer is probably "zero." But if you're running a two-sided market - a market, like eBay or Monster.com or AdWords or YouTube or Digg or even Second Life, that needs to attract both buyers and sellers (or content generators and content consumers) - the answer may be "a lot."

seth godin - permission marketing book excerpt

  • Be personal. Be relevant. Be specific. And always be
anticipated. Anticipation, of course, is even better than
expectation. Without surprising the consumer, gradually
raise the level of permission you extract.
  • Wouldn't it be great if we could eliminate this incredibly
wasteful part of the process? Unfortunately, Permission
Marketers cannot ignore the interruption part of the
process. They can't walk away from the cost of getting
strangers to raise their hands. But they CAN leverage the
expense of that interruption across multiple interactions.

Unleash Your Ideavirus

  • Soybeans, Wal-Mart, and Ideaviruses

The first 100 years of our country's history were about who could build the biggest, most efficient farms. The second 100 years were about the race to build efficient factories. Welcome to the third century: This one's about ideas.

  • Ideas are driving the economy, ideas are making people rich, and, most importantly, ideas are changing the world. So even though we're clueless about how best to organize the production of ideas, one thing is clear: If you can get people to accept, embrace, adore, and cherish your ideas, you win! You win financially, you gain power, and you change the world.

Articles: John Assaraf: The Power of Focus - Growth Focus

  • Many years ago, I coined the terms "Bull's-eye Thinking" and
"Bull's-eye Action" as a way to get the businesses and
individuals I was consulting with, to focus only on the most
important activities every day, instead of the stuff that shows
    up on a daily basis.
