  • Smith is today best known as the father of laissez-faire capitalism, although that's always been a simplification. But during his own lifetime, Smith was far more famed for penning The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which he built on a foundation of sympathy and fellow feeling.

    As Smith writes:

"How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it."

Walkom: Four reasons to worry about the recovery (sorry, finance guys) - thestar.com

Not that there's anything intrinsically wrong with finance. Any society must have a mechanism to ensure that economic surplus is put to productive use and that capital is efficiently circulated.

But at certain times in history, the emphasis on moving capital around may interfere with the production that ultimately creates that capital.

Lenin made this point in 1916. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, who is not a Leninist, makes a similar argument in his New York Times columns when he laments the distortions that encourage brilliant mathematicians to spend their time devising complex, and ultimately harmful, financial innovations (the legalized scammery known as collateralized debt obligations comes to mind) instead of doing something useful.

Writing, Briefly

it gives me hope to see how much Paul Graham deliberates over his writing. It takes him more than an hour to write this piece, and weeks to finish an essay.

How We Decide by Jonah Lehrer

If you’re going to take only one idea away from this book, take this one: Whenever you make a decision, be aware of the kind of decision you are making and the kind of thought process it requires.
