Asbestos FAQ (-)

  • If the pipe insulation is in good condition, and there is
little or no chance of it being disturbed, it is probably best to
leave it in place. If the pipe insulation is slightly damaged, it
can usually be repaired or encapsulated using various methods.
Often, there is less risk repairing the material than removing it.
EPA does not regulate the removal and disposal of asbestos
containing material from privately owned single family residences.
  • If the asbestos is in an unregulated structure, it is not
subject to the regulations and therefore a specialist is not
    required to remove it

Asbestos Abatement: A Primer (-)

  • Until recently, many experts
recommended that all asbestos-containing materials be removed from buildings
as a matter of course. Now the epa and others suggest that the material can
remain in place if it is in good condition, provided there are no compelling
reasons to remove it, such as a renovation project or plumbing alterations.
  • Do not, under any circumstances,
remove asbestos yourself. Asbestos is highly dangerous when it is airborne.
It is far more dangerous to remove asbestos improperly than to leave it alone,
    no matter what its condition.

ZFS Deduplication : Jeff Bonwick's Blog (-)

  • ZFS now has built-in deduplication.
  • Deduplication is the process of eliminating duplicate copies of data.
Dedup is generally either file-level, block-level, or byte-level.
Chunks of data -- files, blocks, or byte ranges -- are checksummed
using some hash function that uniquely identifies data with very high
probability. When using a secure hash like SHA256, the probability of a
    hash collision is about 2^-256 = 10^-77
