Coyote's Path Home School in the Mill Valley and the Bay Area, California
"A Weekly Nature Immersion Course for Homeschoolers
In this homeschool program, Nature is both the classroom and the teacher. We investigate the lives of plants and animals, as well as our relationship to them through tracking, bird language, edible and medicinal plants, and survival skills. Through nature awareness games, guided explorations, and storytelling, students take opportunity to pursue their passions, as well as expand their curiosity to new parts of nature's mystery."

Rainwater harvesting Calculations - quick and easy!
GENERAL RULE OF THUMB: You can collect 600 gallons of water per inch of rain falling on 1,000 square feet of catchment surface (e.g. your roof).
OR,
27,000 gallons of water per inch of rain falling on 1 acre of catchment surface.
Example:
Harvestable water (gallons) = catchment area (ft2) X rainfall (ft) X 7.48 gallons/ft3
How to calculate the catchment area (of the footprint) of you roof.
Is your roof square or rectangular? If so, measure the length and width in feet. Length X Width = Sq. Ft. of roof catchment.
In Marin, our annual average rainfall is 48 inches, or 4-ft. The actual rainfall will vary from location to location. You can research your town's rainfall online.
H2ouse.org : Tour : Landscaping : Rain Harvesting & Greywater Irrigation
Rain harvesting is an ancient technology used by many cultures to capture rainfall and use the water for irrigation and drinking. Today, rain harvesting is a popular residential water conservation method for supplementing landscape irrigation. Most commonly, rainwater is collected from the runoff from roofs into gutters and then directed into a storage vessel such as a barrel or cistern. The water is stored until needed for hand watering or drip irrigation. Harvested rain water should only be used for irrigation unless it is treated to potable standards.

Forest primeval to a whale of a view, in 10 miles
ut it together, along with more than 25 species of blooming wildflowers right now, and you have one of the best spring walks anywhere. The Sky Trail Loop is at Point Reyes National Seashore in west Marin, it's free, and while most can handle the trip without a physical issue, it's just long enough and steep enough so you know you've earned it.
This trip is a 9.6-mile loop with an estimated cumulative elevation gain of about 1,800 feet. It takes about four-hours hiking time, with an ideal picnic site for lunch at the halfway point. You also pass two backpack-style campsites. That means the trek can be turned into a weekend overnighter or wilderness prep for more ambitious trips later this year. I did this hike Tuesday with a small group and we came across only a handful of other people, and there was a three-hour stretch when we had it all to ourselves.
