  • CAP became an official "hearts and minds" civic action program, and a school of sorts was eventually established near Da Nang. Training was brief (ten days) and covered a few bare essentials - some Vietnamese phrases, customs, and culture, some civic action precepts, and some military topics - far too short to be of much real good, though a step in the right direction. Upon graduation, you were posted to your unit.

The Vietnamese miracle - The Daily Princetonian

  • Vietnam still has a long way to go — beneath the surface lie several serious problems, not least of which is the potential danger of Western and regional corporations exploiting local workers or of corruption and nepotism undermining the stability Vietnamese believe should be the country’s top political concern. All the same, in 30 years, Vietnam has managed to transform itself from a nation ravaged by war to one in which serious economic growth has dominated the last two decades. In many ways, that’s nothing short of a miracle.

Attack on Quang Tri City During the Vietnam War » HistoryNet

was also in a Combined Action Group also known as a Combined Action Platoon from March, 1969 to Aug. 1969 stationed in a hamlet called Nhu Le in Quang Tri Providence. I volunteered to live in that village supporting my fellow Marines who were attacked almost every night before I got there. That is why the call for volunteers. Two Marine squads and a platoon ARVNs to protect the village that was 50% VC. Sporadic firefights.

Not enough is written or understood about the CAG’s effect on the war. Not one village was taken over by the VC where a CAG unit was stationed. The villagers, both farmers and VC (we could not tell the difference) benefited from Medical attention.

Women on Foreign Policy

  • In an equal opportunity world a woman should at least have the right to be attractive and succeed in politics without having to apologise for it to the self appointed defenders of feminism, regardless of her platform and views.

ZNet - 1968 DNC

  • In addition, there were police everywhere.  Not just in uniform but also undercover.  Everywhere we went we were followed by tails, cops whose job was to stick with us like glue.  They made little attempt to camouflage their task.  They followed us as we walked down the street.  They followed us into restaurants.  One time we went into a restaurant in Lincoln Park and three cops sat down at the counter.  We waited for them to order, and when their meals arrived, we got up and walked out.
  • We were actually quite an open bunch since we didn't feel we had anything to hide.  We said pretty much what we believed and what we wanted to do. Anyway it never occurred to us that he was a cop.  What sense would that make?  We already had cops that followed us everywhere we went.  We would later find out differently but we were still naïve in too many ways.

Deadly denial: Shifting rules drowning sick nuclear workers : Deadly Denial : The Rocky Mountain News

While a large number of sick workers have radiation-induced cancer, many suffer from other diseases linked to toxic exposures. In both cases, sick workers must prove a link between their exposures and their illnesses, but Congress intentionally made the standard of proof lower in the case of toxic exposure than in radiation-only cases. The labor department continues to use the higher bar for both.
