River towns cope with rising waters - Galesburg, IL - The Register-Mail

  • That was one day after Rupert Wenzel decided to give up on Main Street.

He owned the Commercial House, an aged brick building constructed as a hotel in 1849.

“We bought the place and wanted to run a business out of it,” Wenzel said as he packed the back end of a pick-up truck with antique furniture.

The old hotel was sandwiched between the flood waters and yellow safety tape strung up by the Keithsburg police.

“The flood of 1993 came along and the building has been settling ever since,” Wenzel said. “We just kept it because we come to town to fish. But last night I’d had too much. I went out and told everyone the first $100 gets my building.

“I sold it for $100 on the spot.
