IE6 Must Die for the Web to Move On

  • You might be asking yourself two questions right about now: What’s so bad about IE6? And why do so many people still use it? The answer to the first question is relatively simple: Internet Explorer 6 is outdated technology in a rapidly-changing Internet landscape. Imagine trying to use the social web, Microsoft Office, iTunes, IM, your video games, and all of your desktop apps…with a computer from 2001 (20 GB of space, 256 MB of RAM, anyone?). It’s the same thing: a great deal of new web technology is simply incompatible with IE6.
  • We’ve sputtered on with the dead weight of IE6 since 2001, but we’re just now reaching a breaking point, and companies are starting to feel it. YouTube and Digg clearly believe that it’s not in their best interests to continue supporting the outdated browser and thus have put the word out about their plans to phase out support. More and more companies will take their lead as it becomes harder and harder to justify the cost of keeping a site running correctly in Microsoft’s old browser.

  • زائر موقع جريدة البديل لا بد أن يضبط ترميز متصفحه على ترميز ويندوز العربي Windows-1256، و إلا فإن الصفحة تكون غير مقروءة. أستطيع أن أتفهم مشاكل الترميز في النظم العتيقة العاملة منذ سنوات طويلة، لكن لا أفهم لماذا ينشأ أي موقع جديد بأي ترميز غير يونيكود!



    المسألة ليست شكلية، و لا مسألة مبدأ مجرد لكوني أستخدم نظام تشغيل غير ويندوز، بل المشكلة عملية لأن مستخدمي قارئات التلقيمات قد لا يتمكنون من قراءتها حيث أن بعضها أصبح لا يأخذ في حسبانه وجود ترميزات غير يونيكود، و مع أن هذا قصور من جانب مصممي قارئات التلقيمات عن تطبيق المواصفات، إلا أني أستطيع تقبل توقع استخدام ترميز موحد يصلح لكل نظم الكتابة و التشغيل عن توقع استخدام ترميز يخص نظام تشغيل معين.

The Digital Divide

  • Roughly one-quarter -- 27%-- of U.S. adults are not Internet users.

    43% of those who don't surf are over the age of 65.

    43% have household incomes under $30,000 a year.

    In comparison, 85% of households with incomes over $100,000 have broadband at home.

    About one-third -- 35% -- of people who do not have high-speed Internet or broadband service said it was because service was too expensive. They said the price would have to drop before they adopted the service.

    62% of dial-up users say they are not interested in giving up that connection for broadband. When asked what it would take to get them to switch to broadband, 35% said the price would have to fall.

  • The simple solution: Pull the battery out of the laptop and leave it out when you're deskbound. Most laptops can run on straight AC power, so there's no need for the battery. And it's easy enough to pop back in when you hit the road (though obviously you'll want to make sure it's charged, so plan ahead a bit).



    It's a hassle, sure, but consider the price of a replacement battery: usually $100 or more. What's more, old, discarded batteries wreak havoc on landfills. Sooner or later, they'll leak acid into the ground. So it's in your best interests to keep your battery as long as possible, and to keep it from dying a premature death.
