  • For the most reliable coverage of the Iran story, I strongly recommend the New York Times. I mean, they have Michael Slackman in Cairo and Nazila Fathi in Toronto, and they have "independent observers" in Tehran. What else do you want? If you want more, the station of King Fahd's brother-in-law (Al-Arabiyya), has a correspondent in Dubai to cover Iran. And according to a report which just aired, Mousavi received 91% of the vote in "an elite neighborhood." I kid you not. They just said that.

  • This argument by Michael Slackman is overstated. He is right though that it was much more easier to mobilize against the US in the era of Bush. Of course, it can't be argued that the voting behavior in Lebanon follows the premise of Rational Choice Theory, unless you amend it to make it Sectarian Quasi Rational Theory of voting behavior. Sectarian issues relate to external influences so perception of outside powers were relevant.

  • Michael Slackman defines Hizbullah: "Hezbollah, Iran’s proxy force in Lebanon." I wonder if he would define Muhammad Dahlan Guards as "Israel's proxy force in Lebanon," or Hariri militia as "Saudi Arabia's proxy force in Lebanon", or Awakening Militias in Iraq as "US' proxy forces in Iraq", etc.
