Sober piece from Mike Ellis (@m1ke_ellis) about making effective use of QR codes. Points out that are QR codes are not an end point on the tech highway, just a stage in the development of techniques that allow "poking the virtual into the real world".
Mike asks us to consider what the value of the user is of scanning in a QR code beyond just typing in a URL and also how people deploying the codes can get some idea of their effectiveness against more traditional methods.

From the Queaar Blog. I'm not sure what this says about the effectiveness of QR codes beyond marketing but there are some interesting demographic points if only from the perspective of the US.

Interesting comment on how the use of phones freed students from a reliance on teachers a little but also that the approach of the teacher was key to the success of the activity.

this sense of student ownership and exploration was of interest to us – the phone seemed to ‘free’ students from the teacher a little
-
teacher style appeared key in how the app and phones were made use of – notably teacher questioning style, their relationhip to the production of knowledge that is whether they saw knowledge as produced by teachers, students, experts, the ‘crowd’ appeared to impact on the way the app was used and inserted into interaction.
Fantastic piece of location-based digital storytelling combining video and audio with Google Maps.
It's taken a bit of work with Actionscript and the Google Maps API to put together but this sort of thing might form the basis of a project for anyone without skills in Web development.

One to try out when I get home. This application uses the backup files from your iPhone to map your movements. Hopefully an interesting window on how location information about us is being logged.

A great collation and commentary on how information can be shown on maps. My particular faves are the maps that challenge misconceptions about the world like the proportionate map examples shown here. I'm ashamed to say I had so little idea that Sudan was quite so big.
