Google taking a similar approach to Openstreetmap here.
It will interesting to see how the 2 coexist.

US only at the moment.

Short report on the use of QR codes to enhance field trips round Kew gardens.

Interesting comment on how the use of phones freed students from a reliance on teachers a little but also that the approach of the teacher was key to the success of the activity.

  • this sense of student ownership and exploration was of interest to us – the phone seemed to ‘free’ students from the teacher a little
  • teacher style appeared key in how the app and phones were made use of – notably teacher questioning style, their relationhip to the production of knowledge that is whether they saw knowledge as produced by teachers, students, experts, the ‘crowd’ appeared to impact on the way the app was used and inserted into interaction.

A great collation and commentary on how information can be shown on maps. My particular faves are the maps that challenge misconceptions about the world like the proportionate map examples shown here. I'm ashamed to say I had so little idea that Sudan was quite so big.

One for the geographers and mapaholics. How many other countries could you fit into an area the size of Africa. Turns out it's quite a few, and not the tiddly ones.
The commentary in the link makes reference to the fact that tradition map projections like Mercator might be responsible for our skewed view of the globe.
I don't like the term "immapancy", but the best I could think of was spatial illiteracy.

Great for showing the scale of objects or locations in different contexts.

Last week I was debating my wife about how deep the Marianas Trench was (really!). Now I know that if measured out horizontally it would stretch from Gosforth to Birtley. I would have thought it was further but then I started thinking how long it would take to walk that and trying to imagine the weight of water at the bottom of the trench.

Loads of applications for classroom/project work and for infographics.
