Official Google Blog: Automatic captions in YouTube
Since we first announced captions in Google Video and YouTube, we've introduced multiple caption tracks, improved search functionality and even automatic translation. Each of these features has had great personal significance to me, not only because I helped to design them, but also because I'm deaf. Today, I'm in Washington, D.C. to announce what I consider the most important and exciting milestone yet: machine-generated automatic captions.
What are web captions? : Nomensa - Humanising Technology
Captions make a huge difference to deaf and hard of hearing people who access video on the web. Providing real time translation of dialogue and sound effects into text format also provides a much wider group of people with a more engaging experience.

We’ve selected a few that you might want to start with. (Think of this guide as one of those reassuring brochures from Lowe’s or Home Depot, but about websites instead of ceramic tile.)"
Covers design theory, standards advocacy, layout/style, page layout/design, server-side code, graphic design/typography. Good introduction to important design issues.
Save as DAISY XML 2.0 add-in for Word syncs audio and text - Ars Technica
In association with Microsoft, the Digital Accessible Information SYstem (DAISY) Consortium has announced the second version of the Save as DAISY add-in for Microsoft Office Word, available for download over at openxmlcommunity.org. With the integration of DAISY Pipeline Lite, version 2 of the add-in produces a full DAISY multimedia publication with synchronized text and MP3 audio (instead of converting to just a DAISY XML file).
It is possible to transform Word documents into accessible multimedia formats for people unable to read print. It generates full text and audio books using the Text-to-Speech service on your PC. DAISY XML files can be read natively by some DAISY players, and the DAISY Pipeline is still available for processing those XML files. A more complete description of the DAISY standards and Word-to-DAISY conversion is available on daisy.org.
