with MODx we will be using a snippet named Ditto (developed by Mark Kaplan). This is one of the most useful tools that you will see in any CMS environment. Ditto does so much, so well, that it is difficult to summarize what it can do. Basically it provides you a way to easily query the site content, then fine tune the results with multiple filters, while still giving the developer total control over the output structure of the results.

I prefer not to use automaketemplates, because the time needed for templating is nearly the same. Instead I prefer to use the direct way with markers. It has the advantage that non chached pages could be rendered faster and I have a better control over the output.
