KernelEx homepage - latest 4.0 RC2
KernelEx is an Open Source compatibility layer with an aim to allow running Windows 2000/XP-only applications on Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium operating systems.
The basis of the project is a custom symbol resolve engine for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium operating systems which extends base system API with custom API libraries. These libraries implement (or simulate) functions and procedures not originally available on these systems but required to allow modern applications to function and allow user to change the system version reported to applications (similar to Compatibility tab in Windows XP).
This project neither requires nor includes system files from other Microsoft Windows products like Windows 2000 or Windows XP. In fact the only requirement is that the user has installed the Microsoft Layer for Unicode (MSLU) redistribuable library.
This software is provided "as-is," without any express or implied warranty. In no event shall the author be held liable for any damages arising from the use of this software. See the GNU General Public License for more details.

Universal Extractor | LegRoom.net
Universal Extractor is a program do to exactly what it says: extract files from any type of archive, whether it's a simple zip file, an installation program, or even a Windows Installer (.msi) package. This is still a work in progress (see details below), but so far it's proven quite useful and I feel others can also benefit from it.
I should stress that this application is not intended to be a general purpose archiving program. It will never replace WinRAR, 7-Zip, etc. What it will do is allow you to extract files from virtually any type of archive, regardless of source, compression method, etc. The original motivation behind this project was that I wanted an easy, convenient way to extract files from installation packages, such as Inno Setup or Windows Installer packages, without pulling up a command line every time. In the process I got a little carried away and ended up throwing in support for every kind of archive format I possibly could find.
Universal Extractor, like most of my Windows programs, is written in AutoIt, a powerful open source scripting language. Universal Extractor itself, however, is just a front-end that uses many other programs to do the dirty work. Please see the Credits section below for additional information.

How to force MSI files to install on non-supported OS | Live Runway
Since I’m currently running Windows 7 Beta on my computer, I’ve ran into this issue quite a few times. You download some program you’ve been using on Windows Vista before, and once you try to install it, you’re being told “The operating system is not supported. Installation will be aborted.”
For many 3rd party installer systems, using Microsoft’s compatibility wizard will solve the problem. Just tell the wizard that the program requires special permission and ran on older OS version (e.g. Vista) and it should install fine. Unfortunately, this usually doesn’t work for Microsoft Installer packages (*.msi files). Here’s a short tutorial on how to still force those packages to install (taking the Samsung LightScribe software as an example):
1. Hit Windows+R to open the “Run” command prompt and enter %TEMP% to open your temp folder. Select all files and hit Delete. Confirm and just ignore all files you can’t delete.
2. Run LS_Update_1.14.32.1_.exe, which will extract the installer contents to some folder in your temp folder and start the installation. At some point the installation stops and you’re told that your OS is not supported. DON’T hit OK now, leave the message open!
3. Go to your temp folder and look for some cryptic folder like {C1EFD9F9-2726-4203-A83F-848D81B32CD9}. This folders contains the extracted content from the above installer (including the actual MSI package). COPY THE WHOLE FOLDER TO SOME PLACE SAFE (e.g. your Desktop), as the temp folder will be emptied once you exit the setup procedure. After copying that folder, you can now confirm the “OS not supported” message. The installer will exit and the temp folder be emptied.
4. Icon_1 Go to your copy of the former temp folder (e.g. on your Desktop) and locate the MSI package in it (e.g. LS_HSI.msi). Right-click it and select Edit with Orca (Orca is a Microsoft tool to edit MSI packages and is included in the Windows SDK which can be downloaded here).
5. Untitled-1 Now, while there is now absolute standard way how MSI packages check th
MSIZAP: The real power of using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
For this article I will be exposing the real power of using the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility. How to safely remove orphaned files located in the C:\Windows\Installer folder
that have accumulated over the years and gobble up a significant amount of disk space.
Why there are there so many files located in the C:\Windows\Installer folder:
You will find a good number of these .MSI files belong to software such as Java, AV
Software, Norton Ghost, Microsoft's .NET Framework, File downloaded during an
applications update session and so on. It would appear that some software will clean up
after itself and deletes it's file that were in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. A failed
update session will create and leave folders and files behind each time you try to install
the update and therefore you could end up with a lot of files taking up disk space.
There also could be a lot of orphaned (no longer needed) files.
Basic Information about this utility:
There is not a lot of information about this utility, but most of the articles on the web
seem to repeat much of the same information that can be found in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base article titled: Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Which States: “With the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, you can remove a program's
Windows Installer configuration information. You may want to remove the Windows
Installer configuration information for your program if you experience installation
(Setup) problems. For example, you may have to remove a program's Windows Installer
configuration information if you have installation problems when you try to add (or
remove) a component of your program that was not included when you first installed
your program.”
The Graphical Interface:
It was created to fix software installations that failed during the install process and thus
leaving a bunch of files (including a file name that ends with a .msi extention (.msi =
MicroSoft Installer). For example a failed MS Office installation (n
How to Safely Delete Orphaned Patches
If Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 fails to install, you might find additional .msp files under %WINDIR%\Installer for each failed attempt. You should not simply delete these patches, however, because if one of the patches was applied successfully to one target product, deleting that patch will cause future maintenance installs – including repairs, patch install, patch uninstall, and even product uninstall – to fail.
After safely identifying orphaned patches, you can delete them. There are a couple of different ways to identify orphaned patches.
If you have the Windows SDK or the older Platform SDK installed or are willing to install either, you can use msizap.exe to identify and remove orphaned data files such as patches. Run the following command. You will find msizap.exe in the bin folder of the Windows SDK or Platform SDK installation directory.
msizap.exe G!
If you don't want to install either SDK just to get this executable, you can determine which patches are registered and applicable and delete extra patches you find under %WINDIR%\Installer. I have attached a simple script to identify which patches are registered – those patches you should not remove.
To successfully install the patch if you are having problems, please read about known issues with Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 and available workarounds.

CodeProject: RegSvrEx - An Enchanced COM Server Registration Utility. Free source code and programming help
About HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in Windows 2000 and above
Windows 2000 and above versions of Windows provide a merged view of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is formed by a merger of registry keys from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes. What this means, when a registry key HKCR\Test is queried for, if a key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Test is returned if it exists, otherwise HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Test is returned. But when you actually want to create a new subkey in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, Windows creates the subkey under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes. For more information refer to the article in MSDN about Merged View of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
RegSvr32 can only register COM servers for the entire machine and not just only for the current user - as when subkeys for COM registration info like CLSID, AppID, Interface and TypeLib are created under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, they will actually be created under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes. If instead these subkeys are created under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes, only the current user will be able to use the COM server.
User only registration of COM servers
So what are the advantages of registering a COM server for only the current user? The principal advantage is that, the user can still register and use the COM server even if he is not an administrator of the machine or does not have write access to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This is especially useful for developers who do not logon to their machines with adminstrative privileges. I started following this practice of not logging into my machine as an administrator just recently. The main problem I faced was that I was not able to register any COM servers. To overcome this problem I needed a tool that registered COM servers using HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes. The other advantage of this was that, I had no worries about adding lots of useless keys to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE when working on temporary test projects, involving registration of COM servers.
