Grub4DOS is a boot manager that can be easily installed to a flashdrive or hard drive (internal or external). It allows booting multiple operating systems directly as well as booting into bootable partitions.

For the purpose of this guide, Grub4DOS will be used to setup a flashdrive to boot the Acronis Resuce Media. This can be done by booting to the partition on the flashdrive (as setup by the Acronis Media Builder program) or by directly booting the Acronis ISO file. When you use the ISO method, you can put as many Acronis ISO images as required on the same flashdrive. This allows you to easily be able to boot into True Image Home 9, 10, 11, 2009, Echo Workstation, etc. by just selecting the desired menu entry.

Here’s how I set up home computers for friends and relatives:

1. Create an Administrator account called “Admin”. No password. (Read on before you flame.)
2. Create a Limited User account for each person who will be using the computer. No passwords.
3. Enable the Guest account if it is anticipated that visitors may need to go online.
4. I instruct all concerned that the Admin account is to be used only for installing software, and to use their individual accounts for all day-to-day use, including web, email, IM, etc.

This has worked quite well for everyone I’ve done this for, and don’t get calls anymore about home pages being hijacked, etc. Users generally don't even have to log out. My 7-year old walks away, the screen saver kicks in, my 3-year old moves the mouse and clicks on his picture (or the frog or whatever it is now) and has his own settings.

OK, I know you’re bursting already: “No password?!?! Are you insane?!?!” Cool down, now. Starting with Windows XP, a blank password is actually more secure for certain scenarios than a weak password. By default, an account with a blank password can be used only for logging on at the console. It cannot be used for network access, and it cannot be used with RunAs. The user experience of just clicking on your name to log on can’t be beat for simplicity. If you can trust everyone who has physical access to the computer not to log on as someone else or abuse the admin account, this is a great way to go. If not, you can always enable passwords.

Der Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 ist mehr als nur ein Mailserver, es ist die ultimative Groupwarelösung, die seinesgleichen sucht. Der Exchange Server 2007 wird im SBS(SMall Business Server) 2008 enthalten sein, jedoch wird jemand, der zuhause einen Windows Homeserver betreibt diesen nicht mehr missen wollen.

Der Exchange Server 2007 bietet einige interessante Features wie z.B.:


* Komfortables Webinterface (hat nahezu den gesamten Funktionsumfang eines Outlook 2007 und unterstützt sogar Drag n Drop).
* Unterstützung für Mobiltelefone bzw. Smartphones. Sogar mit Direct Push (die Mails treffen sofort nach Empfang auf dem Server ein, nicht erst durch abholen). Viele Hersteller wie Nokia oder Apple rüsten in ihren neueren Businesstelefonen diese Unterstützung ein.
* Volle Unterstützung mti Outlook wie Jank-Mail filter, Terminplanung, Emailverwaltung, Aufgaben und Notizenverwaltung.
* Neu ist auch die UM Schnittstelle, diese sorgt dafür das man sogar den Exchange Anrufen kann und sich von unterwegs Emails und Termine vorlesen und sogar diese beantworten kann.

Der Exchange 2007 ist normalerweise jedoch sehr teuer und auch nur in einer 64 Bit Version für Produktiv freigegeben. Doch für einen Homeserver zuhause sollte auch eine nicht zugelassene Produktivumgebung ausreichend sein - insbesondere wir bestimmt eh nicht gedenken Support von MS in Anspruch zu nehmen.

Und genau hier ist unsere Lücke, wo wir ansetzen. Es gibt eine 32 Bit Version, die zum lernen ist - diese läuft normalerweise 120 Tage - aber das ist der Clou, die Version läuft nach 120 Tagen weiter und meldet nur einen unlizensierten Exchange Server. The upgrade will apparently run much faster without C++. I haven't tested it, but you may want to consider uninstalling C++ and then reinstalling VC++ Express Edition if the day ever comes that you need C++.

When you install a patch using Windows Installer, the .msp file is cached in the %WINDIR%\Installer directory. This accounts for some of the space required by Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1. A single patch is cached only once regardless to how many products the patch applies.

Starting with Windows Installer 3.0, any patches that contain the MsiPatchSequence table cause the Windows Installer service to cache any of the original files being replaced into the baseline cache. Any files being replaced in the latest minor upgrade by small update patches with this table are also cached. It is this baseline cache that consumes a lot of drive space on the system drive after installing VS 2005 SP1. The baseline cache facilitates patch uninstall by storing the original files so that they can be copied back to the target locations. Files in existing patches do not need to be cached because they are contained within the cached .msp files. For this reason and because Windows Installer will require these patches during repair and future patch scenarios, the .msp files should not be deleted except by uninstalling the patch from each product to which it's applied. The baseline cache also improves performance when using binary deltas.

Baseline caches are created separately for per-user unmanaged installations, and for both per-user managed and per-machine installations. If you enable Windows Explorer to display system files or type dir /a:s under %WINDIR%\Installer you'll find a directory structure like the following:

Since I’m currently running Windows 7 Beta on my computer, I’ve ran into this issue quite a few times. You download some program you’ve been using on Windows Vista before, and once you try to install it, you’re being told “The operating system is not supported. Installation will be aborted.”

For many 3rd party installer systems, using Microsoft’s compatibility wizard will solve the problem. Just tell the wizard that the program requires special permission and ran on older OS version (e.g. Vista) and it should install fine. Unfortunately, this usually doesn’t work for Microsoft Installer packages (*.msi files). Here’s a short tutorial on how to still force those packages to install (taking the Samsung LightScribe software as an example):

1. Hit Windows+R to open the “Run” command prompt and enter %TEMP% to open your temp folder. Select all files and hit Delete. Confirm and just ignore all files you can’t delete.
2. Run LS_Update_1.14.32.1_.exe, which will extract the installer contents to some folder in your temp folder and start the installation. At some point the installation stops and you’re told that your OS is not supported. DON’T hit OK now, leave the message open!
3. Go to your temp folder and look for some cryptic folder like {C1EFD9F9-2726-4203-A83F-848D81B32CD9}. This folders contains the extracted content from the above installer (including the actual MSI package). COPY THE WHOLE FOLDER TO SOME PLACE SAFE (e.g. your Desktop), as the temp folder will be emptied once you exit the setup procedure. After copying that folder, you can now confirm the “OS not supported” message. The installer will exit and the temp folder be emptied.
4. Icon_1 Go to your copy of the former temp folder (e.g. on your Desktop) and locate the MSI package in it (e.g. LS_HSI.msi). Right-click it and select Edit with Orca (Orca is a Microsoft tool to edit MSI packages and is included in the Windows SDK which can be downloaded here).

For this article I will be exposing the real power of using the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility. How to safely remove orphaned files located in the C:\Windows\Installer folder
that have accumulated over the years and gobble up a significant amount of disk space.

Why there are there so many files located in the C:\Windows\Installer folder:
You will find a good number of these .MSI files belong to software such as Java, AV
Software, Norton Ghost, Microsoft's .NET Framework, File downloaded during an
applications update session and so on. It would appear that some software will clean up
after itself and deletes it's file that were in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. A failed
update session will create and leave folders and files behind each time you try to install
the update and therefore you could end up with a lot of files taking up disk space.
There also could be a lot of orphaned (no longer needed) files.

seem to repeat much of the same information that can be found in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base article titled: Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
