While we haven’t heard much from Microsoft about Windows 8 lately other than the coming launch of the Release Preview in early June, a couple of leaks this week have revealed some tantalizing details.
At the D: All Things Digital conference in June 2011, we demonstrated for the first time the new user interface that we developed for Windows 8.
To be clear, Mountain Lion offers no competitive threat to Windows at all. OS X has never, and will never, achieve the level of success that Apple’s i-devices have, and Mountain Lion certainly won’t change that. No, what I’m talking about here is how Mountain Lion stacks up functionality to Windows 8 and, more specifically, how or whether Apple’s approach to embracing mobile technologies in a traditional PC operating system differs from Microsoft’s.
Using Microsoft’s Metro technology in Windows 8 is like going to a flashy restaurant where your plate is delivered with a tiny morsel of food in the middle, but the rest of the plate is unused, says one tester.
Is your PC running slow? Even brand new PCs often come with LOTS of pre-installed software that can cause that new machine to come to a crawl. Not to mention all of the annoying pop-ups! Others may have a PC that's a couple years old and we're the ones that installed a bunch of junk! It happens to the best of us. We try a bunch of programs over time and forget to remove them.
We have all done it; when we see a link to a web page that we want to share with others, we copy that website URL, then go to another web site or a program like an email client, Facebook or Twitter, and then past that URL we want to share. Now Microsoft says that experience has been made much more simpler with both Internet Explorer 10 and Windows 8.
If there's one technology Windows Phone users have been yearning for it's Photosynth. The photo-stitching software creates "synths" or 3D images from your camera phone, giving an immersive photo that's hosted on the web. Answering that question is more difficult than ever, thanks to large advances in Android technology, as well as the emergence of a third viable option: Microsoft's beautiful Windows Phone OS.
Imagine designing and programming a simulation or game to address a real-world problem. Now imagine that the application can be operated on a mobile device and can be sold in a global marketplace. The excitement and engagement of programming within a game context continues as students learn to design and implement complex games within the Windows Phone 7 environment and explore games with Advanced XNA and Kinect.
With the new trend of discless devices (tablets, netbooks, ultrabooks and all in between) Microsoft saves a few bucks on the licensing costs for unsupported technology, while it and OEMs only pay up on computers designed to play DVDs out of the box (Dolby and MPEG codecs for online video streaming are included in all versions).
Microsoft is getting ready to ditch the “Windows Live” moniker for the company’s suite of online services like mail, messaging, syncing and account management. The changes to Microsoft’s cloud offerings will be more than skin deep though; the revamped Windows Live services will be tightly integrated into the coming Windows 8 operating system.
