A reminder–CS & IT Conference 2012
A while back I did a top 10 sites for finding images and clip art for education. However, a lot of things have changed since then and a few of those sites no longer exist. That being said a handful of new and exciting sites have been developed for education for finding images which led me to creating a new list.
The use of mobile technology has opened up a whole new world in education. Terms like BYOD (bring your own device) is a common place occurrence. These devices has allowed educators and students to learn, teach, and study in a whole new way. Learning is no longer limited to the classroom and can occur in real-time almost anywhere. I've decided to list my favorite sites that can be used w/ mobile phones for educational purposes.
It's been one month since I "kicked off a research project for Mozilla, exploring whether or not the organization should develop a tool to help people learn HTML5. It's been rather a whirlwind, I must say, talking to a lot of smart folks -- 12 teachers and technologists (the links to my notes are below) -- about ideas around Web literacy and Web building.
Are you teaching Advanced Placement Computer Science? Are you looking for supplemental exercises that may help you students with the concepts? If so this announcement may be of interest to you. Pex for Fun has been around for a while offering coding duels in C#, F# and Visual Basic. Recently though it was decided to invest some time, money and effort to adapt some exercises specifically to help learn APCS concepts. Most students find the differences between Java and C# pretty minor at this level so most APCS students will find this doable even if they have only been taught Java previously.

The book contains a songwriting guide and 8 lessons and original songs as well as a video. She would love if you would download the book and ideally use them with your students. The topics will obviously span a range of grade levels as well as the songwriting guide would be useful for many ages.
U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) and Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) today introduced the Computer Science Education Act, which will help prepare Americans for the more than 1.5 million high-wage computing jobs that are expected to be created in the U.S. by 2018. The bill will help states to increase and strengthen their computer science offerings in K-12 education.
I’m a huge fan of the FIRST organization and their robotics programs at various education levels. So I thought it might be a good idea to pass along this announcement. Most of us know that STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are cool, fun and exciting. A lot of students don’t know this. The hope is that this special will help show kids, and adults, that what we know is actually real.
Michael Scherotter who works for Microsoft decided to run a computer programming day camp in his home for his 9 year old son and 9 of his friends. Taking on teaching programming to 10-year olds may not be for everyone but from the sound of Michael’s blog posts it sure sounds not only possible but quite a bit of fun.

I’m incredibly happy that Google has added the option to search over SSL by going to https://www.google.com/ — note the “s” in “https.” I’m writing this blog post in a hotel right now because I’m in Europe for a week doing a series of tech talks, but I could just as easily be working down at local Dublin cafe with an open WiFi hotspot.
