Textbooks are a thing of the past, says the common wisdom. Well, the common wisdom of the Technorati maybe. The problem with that thinking is that the number one publisher in the world is Pearson, a textbook publisher, who brought in $7.75 billion in 2009.
Apple reports schools in more than 600 districts have bought iPads for all of their students. And it’s not happening just in wealthy suburbs. Schools in urban districts like New York City and Chicago are also handing out iPads.
Apple's iPad Textbooks Cost 5x More Than Print
From a Publisher's perspective Apple's iPad textbook initiative is a decent 1.0 release with promise. I've had a few weeks to play with iBooks Author and iBooks2 and discuss them with colleagues. I'll write about the many positives in future posts.
Why iPad Textbooks Are Still Too Expensive for Schools [INFOGRAPHIC]
The Utah State Office of Education announced that (1) it will be supporting the development of Utah-specific open textbooks for all secondary language arts, mathematics, and science courses, and (2) that the USOE recommends that all schools across the state consider these open textbooks for adoption in their secondary language arts, mathematics, and science courses for this fall (2012).
How to Create Your Own Textbook — With or Without Apple
Study: Algebra iPad app garners higher math scores over traditional textbooks
Apple’s launch of a new suite of textbook-related services for the iPad is being widely celebrated, and with good reason. The ability to have beautiful, interactive and easy to use e-books on the tablet makes a huge amount of sense
So as expected, Apple announced their new textbooks for the iPad. Ahead of tomorrow’s announcement from Apple, other companies are throwing their hats in the DIY textbook ring. These companies are hoping to get you, the teacher, writing your own textbook or at least contributing up-to-the-minute facts so no textbook is ever out of date again.

What with the Internets being all over the place and everyone getting all their knowledges from web-o-matic sites, it’s only reasonable to think that old fashion 85-pound history textbooks are on their way out. Also, they’re lighter.
