Between 2009 and 2011, Apple acquired three mapping companies in quick succession: Placebase, in 2009; 3-D mapping outfit Poly9 in 2010; and in 2011, C3 Technologies, a second 3-D mapping company. Three mapping-company acquisitions in as many years. But for good reason: Apple has been hard at work developing its own in-house mapping solution for iOS, and now it’s finally ready to debut it.

Recently, our school purchased a license to an amazing Mind Maping application called MindMeister. If your’e not familiar with it, MindMeister is a mind-mapping, brainstorming, and collaborating tool. This is finals week. I just got an email from a couple of my students telling me that they were collaboratively studying for the test via a MindMeister map and sent me an invite.

During 1990, in response to the common problem of a filled hard disk, I became obsessed with the idea of producing a compact visualization of directory tree structures. Since the 80 Megabyte hard disk in the HCIL was shared by 14 users it was difficult to determine how and where space was used. Finding large files that could be deleted, or even determining which users consumed the largest shares of disk space were difficult tasks.
