Nine Dangerous Things You Were Taught In School
Be aware of the insidious and unspoken lessons you learned as a child. To thrive in the world outside the classroom, you’re going to have to unlearn them.
When a school leader neglects to allocate sufficient professional development time for newly-purchased classroom technologies, that's not poor technology leadership, that's just poor leadership.
Is the student who organizes tag during recess or chooses to help a classmate with math on track to be a senator, a CEO, or a community leader?
This week, I begin a cohort based in Alberta, Canada, working with educational leaders that are both school and division based. A question that I have received from many educators/administrators is what could I possibly share on Twitter. Although this is not the “definitive” guideline below, I would love to share my thoughts on what you should tweet:
Good reading for everyone who would like to think they're a leader. Imagine the possibilities if all the money spent building an internal infrastructure was spent in building capacity with learners. As with all things, you need to choose wisely. Using cloud-based apps solely to save money or for simple things isn't smart either.
If a person became a technology director before about 1995, he/she probably came up through the teaching ranks. As a classroom teacher or librarian, if these folks showed an aptitude for, or even an interest in, educational technology, there was a path to administering it. After about 1995 computers, district-wide educational management applications and networks became sufficiently complex and important to the day-to-day operation of schools that technology directors were hired from business or computer science programs with little or no experience as teachers.
Leadership to change our schools' cultures for the 21st Century
“Support for school leaders to expand reform initiatives”
When a classroom "works" it is a powerful place to be. While the students ultimately make these moments, talented educators need to set the stage for success.
The same can be said of harmonious faculty and staff relations. A building full of talented people does not guarantee a comfortable place to grow as an educator. In honor of Edutopia's 20th anniversary, here are 20 ways to cultivate a healthy faculty environment:
The best leaders I know—the ones who can help their organizations make the changes we increasingly need today—understand this. In the video below I talk about the elements of a good story and how they combine to make an important impact.
We’ve all had leaders who are really taken with their image in the mirror, so impressed by the power and influence they seemingly wield. They’re the center of attention, and pleasing them becomes the focus of all our efforts. It's easy for us to notice their selfishness as they push the people in our organizations to increase the bottom line. And yet they’re often unaware of just how easily we see through their shallow veneer.
So, you have any idea. Now, how to get administrative support?
5 Traits of 21st Century Educational Leadership
The first question asked was, "What are the technologies you couldn't live without in the classroom?" My response—that I could successfully prepare my students without any technology in my classroom—always catches audiences off guard. "What's the point of 21st century teaching and learning," they'll ask, "if you don't have any technology in your room?"
Good one-word definitions say enough. John Maxwell defines leadership as, “Influence.” His full definition is: “Leadership is influence: nothing more, nothing less.”
The Science Leadership Academy is a partnership high school between the School District of Philadelphia and The Franklin Institute. SLA is an inquiry-driven, project-based high school focused on 21st century learning that opened its doors on September 7, 2006.
An earlier version of this chart was published in the September 1996 issue of Educational Leadership, and reprinted as the title essay in the anthology What to Look for in a Classroom...And Other Essays.
