Interactive whiteboards provide myriad opportunities for your students—and one that's often overlooked is independent or small group instruction. Using interactive technology on a smaller scale is a great way to allow students to interact on the material in a personal way that's efficient, effective and—you guessed it—interactive. Here are five ideas.
How does the mind work — and how does it learn? Teachers' instructional decisions are based on a mix of theories learned in teacher education, trial and error, craft knowledge, and gut instinct. Such gut knowledge often serves us well, but is there anything sturdier to rely on?
A recent study indicates that online learning is as effective as, if not more, than traditional face to face instruction.
Differentiated Instruction and the SMART Board will examine different learning styles and how you can use the SMART Board to meet the needs of your different learners. We will look at adding images, sounds, video, text and multimedia to meet the needs of students and then cover various tips and tricks for effective lesson design. A lot of training is using video and it’s becoming very easy to create and distribute. As things become easier and cheaper we often see the quality decrease. For example, if you had to spend $10,000 to hire a camera crew to come out and do a video shoot then you’d probably have all of the scripts and talent well prepared. However, if you can quickly create a video on your handheld camera and upload it to YouTube then you might be tempted to just “wing-it”.
Challenge is a powerful motivator when students take on tasks they find meaningful and, through their efforts and perseverance, succeed. As Mark Twain wrote, “The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”
We have students in our classrooms who struggle academically and others who learn at an advanced level and accelerated pace. We can meet the needs of all learners by differentiating instruction.

Customizing your teaching to suit each child makes eminent sense. Kids are different, they learn differently, so we should teach them differently, right? But when you're staring out at 20 or 30 students as individual as snowflakes, you may find yourself asking that ever-daunting question: "How?"
