From when I joined Microsoft in 1997 until I left in 2004, and even since then (but especially during the heady days of the DOJ lawsuit), accusations flew fast and furious accusing Microsoft of misusing the word “innovation”, that Microsoft couldn’t innovate, or didn’t innovate.
The 2012 Scratch competition has launched, which encourages primary and secondary school students to get involved with computing and software development.
Run by the Irish software engineering research centre Lero and supported by the Irish Computer Society, the competition helps students learn how software is built and how it works. It encourages them to be creative with the software and shows what opportunities are available in the technology sector.
We founded Startl to pave the way for cool new digital media learning products to move from idea to funding and into learners’ hands. We’re working outside the established systems in a public-private partnership to break new ground in the education market and help to launch the next generation of digital tools for learning.
Our 21stC life is a result of innovation. Innovation differs from improvement because it disrupts. It messes with the way we do things, it can be uncomfortable, but ultimately, if it is truly innovative it will change our life for the better.
This is a good read. You could substitute "Your Local School Board" anywhere that the word government appears. We constantly talk about change in education and it's increasingly more difficult to get the new tools when you have to work your way through old processes. There is certainly a need to have a procurement policy in place to ensure that you're getting the best value for the dollar and to honour the needs of the vendor by a solution that falls between the old process and desire to use the new technologies needs to be found.
