I was reminded how innovation dies when the email below arrived in my inbox. It was well written, thoughtful and had a clearly articulated sense of purpose. You may have seen one like it in your school or company.

Salman Khan, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard Business School, was working as a hedge fund manager when he began posting videos on YouTube six years ago to tutor young family members in math. That led to the 2008 creation of the Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization that has built a free, online collection of thousands of digital lessons (nearly 3,000 of them created by Mr. Khan himself) and exercises in subjects ranging from algebra to microeconomics.

I'm a visiting scholar at USC and the independent co-chairman of the Deloitte Center for the Edge.

In a previous life, I was the Chief Scientist of Xerox Corporation and the director of its Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). I was deeply involved in the management of radical innovation and in the formation of corporate strategy and strategic positioning of Xerox as The Document Company.

Today, I'm Chief of Confusion, helping people ask the right questions, trying to make a difference through my work- speaking, writing, teaching.

Posted on January 20, 2012
From when I joined Microsoft in 1997 until I left in 2004, and even since then (but especially during the heady days of the DOJ lawsuit), accusations flew fast and furious accusing Microsoft of misusing the word “innovation”, that Microsoft couldn’t innovate, or didn’t innovate.

Our 21stC life is a result of innovation. Innovation differs from improvement because it disrupts. It messes with the way we do things, it can be uncomfortable, but ultimately, if it is truly innovative it will change our life for the better.

This is a good read. You could substitute "Your Local School Board" anywhere that the word government appears. We constantly talk about change in education and it's increasingly more difficult to get the new tools when you have to work your way through old processes. There is certainly a need to have a procurement policy in place to ensure that you're getting the best value for the dollar and to honour the needs of the vendor by a solution that falls between the old process and desire to use the new technologies needs to be found.

Design teaches us that creativity is not an innate ability--it is the end result of many forms of intelligence coming together, and intelligence born out of collaboration and out of networks. Perhaps true CQ resides in the group and the community, and not the individual. Now, how are we going to measure that?
