Foursquare is parting ways with Google Maps in favor of crowdsourced maps created by the OpenStreetMap project.

Foursquare announced the change in a blog post Wednesday, explaining its decision to make the big API switch. To power the new maps, Foursquare is partnering with MapBox, a startup which calls itself “a beautiful alternative to Google Maps” and uses data from OpenStreetMap.

The point is something that seems to define our work and, I think, modern web cartography beyond the general practice of “making maps”: it’s all about purposeful design. Cartographic design is more than visuals and aesthetics; there’s room for the cartographer’s design decisions at every step between the initial earthly phenomenon and the end map user’s behavior.

Google Maps is an incredibly useful tool, one that I personally use every week (often daily) to find my way around town, locate bus stops and businesses, get point to point directions, and to look up places I travel to (like the one below of our trip to New Zealand).

Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan, a billionaire Sheikh and member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family, has had his name carved into the sandy surface of an island he owns in the Persian Gulf. It is no lackadaisical sand-scrawling, though: At half a mile tall and 2 miles long altogether, the letters HAMAD are visible from space.
