Gaming  is one of the favourite things kids and even some adults love to do on their mobile devices. Some spend hours with eyes glued to their screens Playing Nintindo or Angry Birds, others create groups and teams and play until early hours of morning. I do not blame parents when they would come complaining about their kids spenidng more times in front of their computers playing games then they would do on homework assignments.

Minecraft in the Classroom is a recent addition to the field of game-based learning. It is a sandbox game where players can create and build, fight off enemies and explore vast landscapes. As is the nature of sandbox games, players can roam free, choosing objectives as they go. Because Minecraft has such open possibilities and potential, the teacher can choose how he or she wants to use it. Just as the student has the ability to be creative, the teacher has the same. That can be overwhelming, but luckily, there is a tool for using Minecraft created by teachers for teachers.

The prevalence of games in our culture provides an opportunity to increase the understanding of our global challenges. In 2008 the Pew Research Center estimated that over half of American adults played video games and 80% of young Americans play video games. The vast majority of these games serve purely to entertain. There are a growing number of games that aim to make a difference, however. These games range from those that show players the complexity of creating adequate aid packages and delivering them to places in need to games that require people to get out and work to improve their communities to do well in the game.

Remember Math Blaster? Careening through space, shooting apple cores to learn about multiplication? That’s the most common correlation to the idea of “educational games.” But there’s a completely different way of using games for learning.

Educators are increasingly recognizing the impact of entertainment software and utilizing games as a teaching device in a growing number of classrooms and business settings. In doing so, they are embracing the cultural and technological shifts of the 21st century and expanding the use of a favorite leisure activity, computer and video games, into a critical and still-emerging educational resource.  More than just play, entertainment software is now being used to impart knowledge, develop life skills and reinforce positive habits in students of all ages.
