It is an incredible treat to sit and learn from MIT undergraduates. In the last few weeks, I've listened to lectures explaining special relativity (did you know GPS satellites fall behind Earth time by 40ms a day?!?), learned recursion in CS programs by sorting class members into physical lines by height, and used a forensic investigation of a car crash as a vehicle (ha!) to study acceleration. They are doing a fabulous job, and it's been a delight to see the world through their eyes: filled with passion for exploring the world around them.

One of the most popular posts on Edudemic in 2010 was The 35 Best Web 2.0 Classroom Tools Chosen By You and I felt it might be time for an update to that list for 2011. In order to put together a list of the best Web 2.0 classroom tools, I polled my Twitter followers, Facebook fans (are they still called fans? Likes?) and ran a contest to try and get as many submissions as possible.

As mobile learning and technology is more readily integrated within classroom settings, QR codes can be used as an interesting method to capture a student’s attention and make lesson material more interactive.

Quick response codes, also known as ‘QR’ codes, are simple, scannable images that are a form of barcode. By scanning a QR code image through a mobile device, information can be accessed including text, links, bookmarks and email addresses.

When TED launched its educational website for younger students last week, I think teachers everywhere realised they had to up their game. The 3-10 minute videos are designed to encourage curiosity and show how the world works using compelling animation and the audible explanations of a gifted teacher.  Even if you’re not in high school, the videos are sometimes fascinating, sometimes kinda strange, but generally very cool. Here are some of the best videos that are designed to amaze and challenge your brain.

Today I will be talking to you a little bit about Bookmarklets and how we can use them for educational purposes. First off, a bookmarklet is " a sort of small applet that is stored as URL of a bookmark in a web browser. This applet can provide as much functionality as a standard browser plugin provides." Think about them like add-ons and extensions that we install on our browsers.

I’ve spent many years analyzing, understanding, and deploying education technology. As Edudemic grows up into a more professional site (slowly but surely), I’ve noticed that I get pitched a lot of products in hopes that I write a review / share it with you. Terry, Edudemic’s editor, and I routinely go through pitches and submissions to see if they have some worth.

It only takes half a second for Google to return a search based on keywords you type in, but there’s a whole lot more happening behind the scenes to give you the results you need. Google on Monday launched a video that explains the science behind how the massive search engine actually works.

We all can sometimes get in a rut. Ruts can make us feel comfortable. We use the same book, the same video, the same lesson plan, the same activities, the same tools. I’m no different. I read the same sites, browse the same authors, use the same online tools. I’m a big fan of Flipboard and Zite. I spend time scanning the same RSS feeds every day.
