The Internet has made researching subjects deceptively effortless for students — or so it may seem to them at first. Truth is, students who haven’t been taught the skills to conduct good research will invariably come up short.
Is the student who organizes tag during recess or chooses to help a classmate with math on track to be a senator, a CEO, or a community leader?
Given the work that I do, I’m a sucker for skill lists. As our work worlds grow ever more complex and challenging, it seems that the skills themselves become more complex too.
Increasingly, though, I’ve begun to believe that these lists are distracting us from the real skills of success. While working with big data, operating in virtual teams and”cognitive load management”all sound great, I think there are far more fundamental skills we should be developing first.
Yesterday, at the NJEA Technology Integration Institute, I presented the morning Keynote. I shared ten skills I feel that students should graduate with. These skills don’t have anything to do with standardized testing, or memorizing facts, they are just what skills students need to be prepared for college and beyond.
For some time I have wanted to incorporate video with my students. Not the video in the dvd player and sit in the classroom watching them watch TV type of video, I have wanted to have my students make their own videos and post them on the class website or on their classroom blogs. The difficulty rest in the bindings of server filters, restrictions and controls. Over the last couple of weeks the lining in the cloud has revealed itself.
Effective teaching with technology matches the teacher's goals and the learner's characteristics and needs, with tools that enhance understanding.
As a technology integration specialist I also feel that technology can be used as a tool that supports our state standards and builds on the 21st Century Framework. Good technology integration also motivates and helps students learn.
Digital Information Fluency (DIF) is the ability to find, evaluate and use digital information effectively, efficiently and ethically. DIF involves Internet search skills that start with understanding how digital information is different from print information, knowing how to use specialized tools for finding digital information and strengthening the dispositions needed in the digital information environment.
