transcript of Sarah Palin's rambling farewell address in Fairbanks, July 26, 2009.
Ethical dilemma - Juneau Empire
Alaska Public Records Law and interviews with administration and other source show a pattern of the Palin administration using public resources and the state's ethics laws in an effort to block and discredit both frivolous and credible charges made against the governor.
Most of the cost so far stems from that obstructionist effort and not the complaints themselves, the Empire's inquiry shows.
Hullabaloo > Wingnuts Getting Restless
This week Newsweek published an essay by Rick Perlstein on the current state of the Republican Party. They chose him for the task for obvious reasons: he's the foremost historian of the modern conservative movement. And the point he makes is an important one: the rift between the elites and the grassroots in the party --- as represented by Sarah Palin --- is very significant:
John Kerry: What Gov. Palin Forgot
Writing in this morning's Washington Post, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin wrote, "many in the national media would rather focus on the personality-driven political gossip of the day than on the gravity of these challenges."
Unfortunately, her promise to roll up her sleeves and tackle serious issues is followed by a column that focuses on everything but the single grave challenge that forms the basis of all of our actions: the crisis of global climate change.

fascinating insider account of Palin's rise to, and renouncement of, Alaska's governorship.

FAIRBANKS — Organizers of the governor’s annual Fairbanks picnic July 26 are planning on at least 5,000 guests and a flood of national media.

It’s worth noting that she did find time to talk to several News-Miner editors about the issues, for two hours, back in 2006 while she was campaigning for governor.

We took government out of the dairy business and put it back into private-sector hands – where it should be. [she has no idea what she's saying - down is up]

The Big Article du jour is Todd Purdum's massive profile of Sarah Palin in Vanity Fair.
-
Most of the buzz about the piece deals with a variety of off-the-record snarks about Palin from McCain campaign staff. Indeed, conservative columnist Bill Kristol and McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt have engaged in a public exchange of insults over alleged leaks to Purdham.

Why did so many skilled veterans of the Republican Party—long regarded as the more adroit team in presidential politics—keep loyally working for her election even after they privately realized she was casual about the truth and totally unfit for the vice-presidency? Perhaps most painful, how could John McCain, one of the cagiest survivors in contemporary politics—with a fine appreciation of life’s injustices and absurdities, a love for the sweep of history, and an overdeveloped sense of his own integrity and honor—ever have picked a person whose utter shortage of qualification for her proposed job all but disqualified him for his?
Wonkette : Sarah Palin Will Soon Condemn, Bomb Entire Internet
The Virgin Palin, Our Lady of Eternal Anger, gave birth to the New Jesus at some point last year — or not, who knows, and now Andrew Sullivan just cares about Iran (which is a good thing!) so we’ll never find out the truth — and ever since it has been both a Cardinal/Venial Sin and Sharia Law that no mortal shall “desecrate” an image of the Sacred One … no one but Sarah Palin herself, because Allah both allows and encourages the use of the Holy Infant as a cheap political prop as long as such cruel hackery is performed by the Virgin Palin herself.

newsminer.com • Alaska lawmakers discuss Palin veto overrides
Rep. Jay Ramras, R-Fairbanks, a frequent Palin critic, said her veto of the energy efficiency money left him dumbstruck.
"I don't know how to respond," he said. "It must be nice to live in the Mat-Su Valley where you have the lowest natural gas prices in the United States. The rest of Alaska is struggling, and now they can't access that $28 million."

"The standards are not the education problem we face," the governor said. "The major challenges are persistently low achievement among some students and low graduation rate. Now is the time for the state and school districts to work together to improve instruction and student achievement."\n\nTo that end, in this past legislative session the administration proposed and the legislature funded a pilot program to improve young children's readiness for school and an initiative to help struggling school districts build a sustainable capacity to serve their students.\n\n

“The State of Alaska fully believes that schools must have high expectations of students,” Governor Palin said. “But high expectations are not always created by new, mandated federal standards written on paper. They are created in the home, the community and the classroom.”
