Millions using social media on Xbox Live | Geek Gestalt - CNET News
According to Microsoft spokesperson David Dennis, the first-week figures show that at least 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook, and that half a million Last.fm accounts were created in the first 24 hours of availability. Dennis didn't address how many Xbox Live users have used the service's Twitter feature, except to say that there have been "tweets from nearly every market where we have Xbox Live."
Hollywood’s Next Production: Gagging Social Media | Brian Solis - PR 2.0
“getting an ill-advised word out to the wider public required a TV camera or a gossip columnist; social media eliminates the middleman and enables an actor to broadcast to millions in an instant.”
The First Mobile Device Dedicated Exclusively To Twitter - Venture Capital Dispatch - WSJ
"It’s really nothing new, though. Most new smartphones have access to Twitter. Sarva said the TwitterPeek is built for consumers looking for an affordable alternative to expensive smartphones with higher monthly fees. The TwitterPeek sells for $99 with a $7.95 monthly fee or $199 with a lifetime of service.
“I’m sure it’s going to get some attention because Peek is so controversial,” Sarva said. “People don’t understand there’s a market for an affordable mobile email device and they don’t understand this service is valuable and useful.”"
High Scalability - High Scalability - Why are Facebook, Digg, and Twitter so hard to scale?
"Real-time social graphs (connectivity between people, places, and things). That's why scaling Facebook is hard says Jeff Rothschild, Vice President of Technology at Facebook. Social networking sites like Facebook, Digg, and Twitter are simply harder than traditional websites to scale. Why is that? Why would social networking sites be any more difficult to scale than traditional web sites? Let's find out."
Readers expect news to find them » Nieman Journalism Lab
"There’s a theory in computer science called the technology acceptance model, which basically holds that people use technologies that seem useful and easy to use. Like many theories that have wide support, it makes common sense. What does that mean for news organizations? If they want their readers to embrace interactive features on their sites, these features must not be hidden or confusing or clunky. These interactive features can’t be things that news organization let readers use, but that they don’t let their employees delve into and fully explore. And news organizations can’t whip their employees into such a frenzy of fear that they might violate some internal social-media rule that the employees don’t bother to try anything new."
The Inevitable Showdown Between Twitter And Twitter Apps
There is inherent tension between complements. If a customer is willing to pay $2 for a hotdog plus bun, the hotdog maker wants buns to be cheaper so he can capture more of the $2, or lower the price of the bundle and thereby increase demand.
Pockets Sends Private Voicemails via Twitter - twitter - Lifehacker
It must be said that Twitter/voicemail mashup Pockets has great potential for spammy misuse. Used properly, though, it's a pretty novel way to send a voicemail message to someone you know through Twitter but don't have a phone number for.
Google's Marissa Mayer on the importance of real-time search | Technology | The Guardian
Mayer acknowledges as much while hymning the virtues of the idea: "We think the real-time search is incredibly important and the real-time data that's coming online can be super-useful in terms of us finding out something like, you know, is this conference today any good? Is it warmer in San Francisco than it is in Silicon Valley? You can actually look at tweets and see those sorts of patterns, so there's a lot of useful information about real time and your actions that we think ultimately will reinvent search."
Spot it? "Tweets". It's the only time in the conversation, and the half-hour talk Mayer later gives to an audience of entrepreneurs, where she mentions by name any rival product or brand. (General Motors and General Mills are illustrative, though she does mention Apple and the iPhone – though you'd hardly call it a rival.) She never says Microsoft or Bing or Internet Explorer when asked about the rival's search or about browsing. Tweets implies Twitter, the company Google is often expected to be sniffing around to replace its missed chance with Jaiku.
News Corp won't buy Twitter, won't sell MySpace | Small Business | Reuters
News Corp is not interested in buying popular microblogging site Twitter and will not sell its struggling social network MySpace, said the media conglomerate's chief executive, Rupert Murdoch.
Twitter Makes Hashtags More #Useful
You may have noticed that Twitter has started hyperlinking hashtags. Those are words preceded by a “#” which denote what the Tweet is about and makes it easier to search for Tweets about specific topics and events. For instance, try searching for #realtimecrunchup. Now that they are hyperlinked, when you click on a hashtag, you are led to the search result page for the specific hashtag. Others have been implementing this; FriendFeed (big surprise) has been doing this for awhile. Some of the Twitter clients, including the desktop versions of Tweetie and Seesmic Desktop also provide hyperlinks to hashtags.
Attention Executives: 73% of You Need to Fire Yourselves
There’s also the problem that nearly 20% of executives have no idea what “Enterprise 2.0″ is. That comes from a new study that’s actually talking up the adoption of Enterprise 2.0. It points out that 40% didn’t know what it was at the beginning of the year, so at least that’s progress. What’s more it says that 50% of those surveyed consider enterprise 2.0 to be “very important” to their business success. (Of course, I think working out everyday is “very important” to my weight loss goals…doesn’t mean I actually do it.)
Mainstream Media Still Has Eyes Wide Shut
Like many others, I had Twitter open in one of my browser tabs when the first reports of Jackson’s hospitalization and at the time rumored cardiac arrest started circulating. At first, there was no indication that the news had been confirmed by anyone and people were just frantically retweeting messages carrying lots of question marks while trying to find an online news source to serve as a beacon for further updates on the story. Quickly enough, people started linking to AOL’s online gossip powerhouse TMZ, which was the first to call out his passing away when everyone else was still referencing the hospitalization part.
Dear Wanna-bes, Your Twitter Stardom is Coming to an End
One of the most controversial practices widely used to build up influence on Twitter is now cause for account suspension, according to a message on the Twitter developers email list from a company support team member.
What the Little Bird Told Me About You: Three Twitter Apps for Psych Analysis
ha! SO. TRUE.
----
Most of the social media elite tend to have fairly impersonal tweets; hence, their TweetPsych profiles are relatively homogeneous catalogs of upward mobility, obsession with professional affairs, and moral imperativism
Ironic But True — Many On Twitter Are Just Silent
not surprised by the 10/90 statistics but some of these are curious... 56% not following anyone/53% have no followers? wtf?
----
Yesterday we heard from Harvard Business School researchers that only 10 percent of Twitter users are generating almost 90 percent of the content. Today, HubSpot, a Cambridge, Mass.-based startup has released a study that not only backs up the findings of the HBS study, but also offers more granular information about the Twittersphere.
Twitter is Great for Introverts, and other thoughts about Introverts - Ron Edmondson
Twitter works well for me because it allows me to express my thoughts as they occur, which I may never express around people, but that is also why they appear so random at times. Extroverts need to understand that even though an Introvert may not say anything, it doesn’t mean they don’t have anything to say. (That’s very important to understand in a team environment. Otherwise the Introvert is left out of the discussion and valuable insight goes unheard.) When I have a thought, I can quickly express it in a 140 characters or less through Twitter, which automatically updates my Facebook page. Longer thoughts can be expressed on my blog. Twitter gives me an outlet I didn’t previously have to express myself, without invading my need for introversion.
Modeling The True Value Of Social Networks: 2009 Edition
We’ve now remodeled social network valuations based on current user numbers and Facebook’s most recent $10 billion valuation. The results are dramatically different.
Time says Twitter will change our lives; I Tweeted that I puked | Between the Lines | ZDNet.com
Twitter may be doomed. Time put Twitter on the cover and dished out thousands of words of fluff about it.
This Twitter love-fest is getting out of hand. Can the Time jinx be worse than the Sports Illustrated one? Why am I getting flashbacks about that Transmeta cover Red Herring did back in the day? You know the one where Transmeta was going to change everything. You’re probably asking who the hell Transmeta was? My point exactly.
Twitter co-founder: We'll have made it when you shut up about us | The Social - CNET News
"I think Twitter's a success for us when people stop talking about it, when we stop doing these panels and people just use it as a utility, use it like electricity," said Dorsey, who was on a "Future of Media" panel here Wednesday as part of Internet Week New York. "It fades into the background, something that's just a part of communication. We put it on the same level as any communication device. So, e-mail, SMS, phone. That's where we want to be."
