Reality is broken, says Jane McGonigal, and we need to make it work more like a game. Her work shows us how.

Im learning more about world hunger right now, and in particular what Im wondering about is What other forms of growing food is out there and If those forms of growing food have harmful chemicals in them? I was searching this online and this news article caught my attention because they were talking about different alternatives to food growth in African countries.

"As a result, while much of the world enjoys plentiful harvests, malnutrition remains epidemic in the region. Nearly one-third of sub-Saharan Africa’s population, about 265 million people, suffers from chronic hunger, according to a recent estimate by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations."

The quote I chose here is basically

www.nytimes.com/...22iht-green.html

  • During the 20th century, country after country adopted methods of industrial agriculture — use of fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation and high-productivity grain hybrids — that caused yields of corn, wheat, rice and other staples to soar. This “green revolution,” as it became known, brought food self-sufficiency to nations like China and India, laying the groundwork for their emergence as economic powerhouses.
  • As a result, while much of the world enjoys plentiful harvests, malnutrition remains epidemic in the region. Nearly one-third of sub-Saharan Africa’s population, about 265 million people, suffers from chronic hunger, according to a recent estimate by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

  • Chapin's good deeds are legendary. He co-founded World Hunger Year, a national organization that focuses on grass-roots solutions to eliminate hunger. He was instrumental in establishing a Presidential Commission in 1978 to investigate root causes of domestic and world hunger. On Long Island, Chapin promoted cultural sovereignty. He served actively on the boards of Hofstra University, the Long Island Association, the Performing Arts Foundation, the Long Island Philharmonic and the Eglevsky Ballet (the latter three organizations Chapin founded and supported financially).

  • The game of World of Warcraft, or WoW, is set in a fictional world known as Azeroth and later extending to a further world called Outland. On November 14, 2008, Northrend, the frigid cap of Azeroth, was added. In it, players design a character to play based on a number of starting options, such as the race of character and its type or class. Gameplay primarily consists of completing quests and dungeon runs, and other in-game activities, in order to obtain rewards which will allow one to improve one's character and equipment in order to be able to complete the more difficult quests and dungeon runs. Players can also participate in player versus player combat, either in large groups or small team matches.

This game seems very complex. Like theres a lot of different things involved in just playing the game. Thats interesting that you can engage with other players and fight side by side. I guess its kind of bonding for people of common interest.

  • Over time, a number of additional features and improvements have been added to the game world, such as additional locations to explore. Seasonal and periodical events have also been added, such as Halloween, Midsummer and weekly fishing competitions. Players can also modify their in-game experience through the use of third-party modifications such as macros and add-ons. Note that executable software that can edit the game mechanics (such as Glider) is against the Terms of Use.

Theres a whole other world besides the one we live in now created in this game. I can see how people like nerds would be drawn to a game like this in which they are powerful and they are the leaders.

This is a serious tradegy. When an earthquake happens and so many people die thats already enough but for this to happen in one of the poorest countries is just plain unfair. Maybe if the US paid back Haiti's money then they would be able to afford better hospitals and healthcare.

2010 earthquake haiti relief survivors aid

  • PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Workers are carving out mass graves on a hillside north of Haiti's capital, using earth-movers to bury 10,000 earthquake victims in a single day while relief workers warn the death toll could increase.

There is no way that people should have to dig their own graves for family members. How is the death toll increasing so fast when in California when their earthquake magnitude was the same did only 15 people die. How is the toll 10,000 in Haiti?

  • Workers say they have no time to give the dead proper religious burials or follow pleas from the international community that bodies be buried in shallow graves from which loved ones might eventually retrieve them.

Im not very religious but I think its so horrible that these people cant even recieve a proper burial. Its not fair to the dead and their families.

  • Haiti was forced to borrow money from banks in France and the US to pay reparations to France.   A major loan from the US to pay off the French was finally paid off in 1947.

I dont think people should be forced to pay any war repartations unless they started the war and Haiti definetly did not start it.

Its funny how the US actually sounds like some of the dictatorships our country trys so hard to put down. What hypocrits we are.

I do not think that Obama should be calling upon Clinton and Bush to discuss issues based on the tragic events in Haiti. Especially not Bush. Bush is the reason that we are in a lot of debt with Haiti so involving him in Haitian affairs would not only offend the Haitian people but would loose the trust of the American people. There is a reason why Bush is no longer in office and why Obama is.

Haitian people only make 38 cents an hour??? Crazy!

The man speaking asks " Who armed the Haiti dictatorship?"
Maybe it was the same people that gave Osama weapons?? ah-hem George Bush.

Under the Bush, Obama, and Clinton administration we have supposedly stopped the Haitian government from becoming a democracy. I dont know much on the topic so I cannot say yes or no.

In 1815 the US Marines came into Haiti and basically said " we own this". I highly doubt that we dont have a hand in Haitian affairs if we actually owned the land before. The reason Haiti is bankrupt is because of the US. Exactly why I am the strongest supporter of no interference in foreign affairs. George Washington said it so many years ago as a guide to future Presidents. If only they had listened.

  • Indian religions have similarities in core beliefs, modes of worship, and associated practices, mainly due to their common history of origin and mutual influence.

They are protesting the building of this new temple for ALL of them including Buddhist and Hindu just because the leader is buddhist. I think they arent thinking of the bigger picture for everyone.

This article makes me interested in finding out the true differences in Hindu and Buddhist religions. It seems like theres always a problem in India between religions that are basically the same.

  • In India, a group of Buddhists have gone on a hunger strike to protest the governance arrangements of the Mahabodhi Temple, in the holy city of Gaya in the province of Bihar. Pakistan's Daily Times yesterday reported that the strikers, in a makeshift tent just outside the office of the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee object to a law enacted 60 years ago that sets up an 8-member committee to run the Temple. The committee has 4 Buddhist and 4 Hindu members, and the chairman must be the local district magistrate who must be Hindu. Buddhists argue that this gives Hindus control over a Buddhist holy site.

I did not know that to take on the religion Krishna was almost like a full time job. The value the followers of Indian religion put in their gods is very similar to that of Greek Religion and Christian Religion.

I think thats really cool that even in a predominately white area such as Utah, the people there still accept the Indian religion and fully embrace the new temple built for the sole purpose of practicing indian religion.

I think that its completely unfair to be fired for religious purposes if that was not stated in the job description.

The people did not clearly state in the job requirements that he/she could not practice certain religions, therefore he should not have been fired. Although the company did attend certain religious functions "secretly" , unless stated that they endorse that religion, anyone who does not cannot be penalized.
