[Phoronix] ATI Radeon HD 5850/5870 On Linux?

  • ATI Radeon HD 5850/5870 On Linux?
  • We would expect it to be at least a couple of months before there is any open-source 3D acceleration support for these new graphics cards.

[Phoronix] Another Look At Intel's Lynnfield Linux Performance

  • While we will end up publishing our own set of new Linux numbers
when using an upgraded BIOS for the Intel P55 Kingsberg motherboard, based upon
these Intel-provided numbers it shows that the Turbo Boost Technology should end
up working and that the Core i5 750 is performing much better. The Core i7 870
should also improve similarly. With these newer numbers, they eliminate most of
our concerns regarding the Intel P55 + Lynnfield CPUs on Linux. We would also
like to thank Intel for sharing their Phoronix
    Test Suite
numbers in demonstrating these performance differences.

[Phoronix] Another Look At Intel's Lynnfield Linux Performance

  • Another Look At Intel's Lynnfield Linux Performance
  • Earlier this month we provided a launch-day preview of the
    P55 Chipset on Linux
    along with benchmarks
    from the Core i5 750 and Core i7 870
, which are the new quad-core Lynnfield
processors. We noticed some odd performance issues under Linux when testing out
these new processors, but Intel has since chimed in and we are in the process
of running an updated set of tests.

FAQ - Amarok Wiki

  • for the nostalgic users amongst you we left the possibility to use the old playlist system. However, it's in a very unfinished state, and surely won't make for the 2.0 without additional help (hint! hint!).

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

  • we're going to look at performing a custom install using Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex". By default Ubuntu installs the GNOME desktop environment with lots of extra services and packages which help make it a very friendly distro, but which also help to use up your precious resources. We're going to start from scratch by installing a very basic Ubuntu system and build it up with the desktop and applications we want. Another benefit of this method is that you will get the latest versions of all applications at install time, rather than installing and then performing an update at a later stage.

Anatomy of Linux process management

  • Anatomy of Linux process management
  • For this article, I build the description of processes by first showing the
kernel representation of processes and how they're managed in the kernel,
then review the various means by which processes are created and scheduled
on one or more processors, and finally, what happens if they die.

Linux.com :: The annoyances of proprietary Firefox extensions

  • What annoys me about many of the proprietary extensions is that they are not just extra pieces of functionality for me to pick and choose, but efforts to enlist me as a customer for a new startup.

Should You Move to 64Bit?

  • The biggest problem with 64bit Windows is that kernel-mode drivers need to be 64bit as well. While newer hardware usually has 64bit drivers, hardware that is slightly older usually does not, and this is where the problems start: your favourite piece of hardware simply won't work. User-mode drivers can be 32bit, by the way.
  • The Linux situation is different; here, the advantage of portability and open source come into play: drivers are simply recompiled to support 64bit.

polishlinux.org » Processing RAW files in Linux

  • Decoding is not an easy thing to do, because the light-sensitive points on an array (CMOS or CCD) do not sense colors, only light intensity (the light is filtered separately for each primary color), which means creating a “mosaic” image in the camera. The camera then has to process the image in such manner, as to provide each pixel with full information about the color (based on the neighboring monochromatic points). It is also necessary to correct the white balance, and some cameras also adjust the contrast and saturation. The electronic hardware in the camera has thus a plenty of complex operations to accomplish after the shutter button is pressed.
